Digital Water Consultant - Arup | Chartered Biologist | Water Surveillance for One Health | TEDx Speaker
Our team at Arup are very much looking forward to supporting University of Bath, Bangor University, Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd, University of Exeter and UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) alongside an array of other partners to empower a new generation of scientific leaders to transform how we manage aquatic environmental health via real-time digital water-based systems. We see the incredible value that this CDT will bring to solve some of the most challenging problems. Freshwaters are the most severely impacted environments in terms of chemical pollution, disease and biodiversity loss and act as major conduits of chemical/pathogen exposures in humans and aquatic ecosystems. Reversing global environmental decline and protecting both wildlife and human health requires new real-time management systems that must move from reactive and often ‘crisis management’ to a more pro-active approach. RED-ALERT CDT’s will fill a major national skills gap via empowering a new generation of leaders to transform how we manage environmental health via Real-Time Digital Water-Based Systems. Congratulations to all the academic teams involved to Professor Barbara Kasprzyk-Hordern for her hard work in getting this funded. Thrilled to announce that my research group at Bangor University who will be the hosting partner of one of four new Centres for Doctoral Training in in Real-Time Digital Water-based Systems for Environmental Health Protection (RED-ALERT CDT), led by the University of Bath. The NERC: Natural Environment Research Council funded CDT is an opportunity for us to continue to play a part in improving real-time monitoring and management of freshwaters, building on our reputation in wastewater-based public health surveillance and the catchment-to-coast flow of pathogenic organisms and potentially harmful chemicals. Many thanks to Barbara Kasprzyk-Hordern for getting this over the line 👉 https://lnkd.in/geYRm-5E

After eight-and-a-half years with the Department for Environment and Water, last week I handed my old pass in (complete with my original photo that I had somehow avoided changing all this time!). It has been a pleasure to work with the dedicated public servants of the water policy branch. A group of experts coming together from a broad range of scientific disciplines, economics, governance, natural resource management and legal backgrounds to work on some of the most complex and wicked problems in environmental politics: water and the Murray-Darling Basin. I have learned a lot about hydrology, climate change science, ecology and GIS layers. I convinced others that I understood the intense technical information some of the time. I got to contribute to two Royal Commissions, a response to a Royal Commission report and numerous state and national inquiries. I had many robust debates with my colleagues trying to get to the heart of an issue and untangling a web of problems that would hopefully lead us to sensible policy solutions. And I learned a lot about myself, and I am grateful for having been in a working environment that allowed these self-reflections: - I can and will lead my team and others with kindness, even when the room is tense. - I will contribute my views, even when I'm unsure whether I have yet fully formed an opinion. The worst that will happen is I will be wrong. - I enjoy showing others that they can form their own opinions, and present them as a coherent argument. I am your collaborator and coach, not your examiner. A new challenge awaits!

Happy to share with you another article published out of my research on 'Recommoning Water'! In this paper, Dr Maria Francesca de Tullio and I focus on the neglected facets of embodiment in constructing commons projects. 👉We investigate the case of Naples' water remunicipalisation as a commons-inspired experiment. 👉We propose an embodied commons framework to assess how knowledge(s), practices and experiences are part of this commons-branded water remunicipalisation. 👉We warn against the commons becoming an ‘empty signifier’ and about co-opting its virtues and discourse without founding it on the embodied experiences of the community. 👉We offer some pathways for the alignment of public administrations with water movements in ways that transcend a mere commons discourse and that facilitate ‘caring’ assemblages as custodians of more embodied, locally-situated and sustained water futures in cities. Have thoughts, reactions or know someone working on similar research? Please tag them in this thread! Very excited we’re now able to announce that I’ll be leading the new UK Research and Innovation & DEFRA funded COAST-R Network Plus for Resilient Coastal Communities & Seas (UK Coastal Resilience Network (COAST-R)). Over the next few yrs, I’ll be working with a fantastic group of co-investigators & partners to better understand coastal change and enhance the resilient management of UK coastal communities and seas, and the natural capital that sustains them. The UK’s coasts represent the front line for many of our most significant resilience challenges. Coastal and estuarine communities are living with social and health inequalities, rising sea levels, and coastal erosion, amongst other challenges. We need to build knowledge, action and resilience now, and share learnings and existing best practice across sectors and disciplines so as to build UK coastal and marine resilience. Importantly, COAST-R will work collaboratively across sectors and build skills, knowledge and collaboration to ensure those most impacted by climate change have a key voice in the decision-making process around coastal resilience. We can’t wait to get going with the programme. And to share details of the four large projects funded under the Resilient Coastal Communities & Seas call (in due course!) We’re delighted to announce a new University of Hull-led £2m UK Research and Innovation & DEFRA funded national network to generate knowledge, action and resilience for UK coastal communities and seas: https://lnkd.in/esPAbz5r The UK Coastal Resilience Network (COAST-R) draws on the strengths of Hull academics and our partners at Aberystwyth University, University of Glasgow, University of Leeds, University of Liverpool & University of Southampton. The new Network will work hand in hand with communities, businesses, government bodies and other organisations, addressing UK coastal and marine resilience. Prof. McDonagh, Director of the Energy & Environment Institute and Professor of Environmental Humanities, said: “COAST-R will work collaboratively across sectors and build skills, knowledge and collaboration to ensure those most impacted by climate change have a key voice in the decision-making process around coastal resilience.” Our funding bid is supported by over 20 marine and coastal organisations and over the coming months we will be deepening these relationships and expanding our network. For more information, or to get involved, visit the Coast-R Network website: https://lnkd.in/ejGYv5Sg The COAST-R Network is funded under Resilient UK Coastal Communities and Seas initiative, which is co-funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, NERC: Natural Environment Research Council and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
