America's Innovation Agency
About us
For over 200 years, the basic role of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has remained the same: to promote the progress of science and the useful arts by securing for limited times to inventors the exclusive right to their respective discoveries (Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution). Under this system of protection, American industry has flourished. New products have been invented, new uses for old ones discovered, and employment opportunities created for millions of Americans. The strength and vitality of the U.S. economy depends directly on effective mechanisms that protect new ideas and investments in innovation and creativity. The continued demand for patents and trademarks underscores the ingenuity of American inventors and entrepreneurs. The USPTO is at the cutting edge of the Nation’s technological progress and achievement. The USPTO is a federal agency in the Department of Commerce. The USPTO occupies several interconnected buildings in Alexandria, Virginia. The office employs more than 13,000 people -- including engineers, scientists, attorneys, analysts, computer specialists -- all dedicated to protecting U.S. intellectual property rights. At the USPTO, the talents of all our colleagues enrich our vibrant workplace, and we celebrate and value each one.

From additive manufacturing to liquid metal work and bio-cement, our American defense innovators are creating cutting-edge technologies to support our nation’s military and civilian operations. During a visit to Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property learned more about how the public-private partnership between the U.S. military and U.S. businesses is a force multiplier in the efficient use of resources to develop and commercialize innovations. USPTO is committed to supporting more innovation from all Americans. Learn more about resources and programs to support creators, inventors, and entrepreneurs: https://bit.ly/45SluEw.

To expand opportunities to practice before the USPTO, while maintaining safeguards that ensure high-quality legal representation, we are issuing a final rule to amend the rules governing who may practice before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. The final rule responds to input received from the public, including responses to our previous request for comments and notice of proposed rulemaking. https://bit.ly/4dIugs5

“The diversity and quality of people I get to work with [at the USPTO] is like no other,” says Keyla, a trademark examining attorney and founding member of our Latinos in Trademarks group. Before joining the USPTO, Keyla spent time working for the Puerto Rico Department of Labor and Human Resources working on employment law issues. “That job was definitely a turning point in my professional life because I developed a love for public service and it opened my eyes to how the law impacts the public,” she says, adding that she is committed to being an example of the talent the Hispanic community represents in the workforce. Did you know that the USPTO works closely with IP offices around the world to simplify the process of obtaining a patent internationally? This year, the USPTO and the National Office of Industrial Property of the Dominican Republic (ONAPI) established an Accelerated Patent Grant (APG) arrangement, giving eligible patent applicants the option to expedite obtaining a patent in the Dominican Republic based on a U.S. patent. One of the toughest aspects of leaving military service is the loss of community, but the more than 280 members of the USPTO Military Association (UMA) have rediscovered it here! The UMA is one of the most active Voluntary Employee Organizations at America’s Innovation Agency, hosting events on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, military service birthdays, and during special emphasis months and days, including a “Women in the Military” panel discussion during Women’s History Month and a “Hispanics in the Military” panel discussion during Hispanic Heritage Month. The group also prides itself on supporting members personally and professionally. Past initiatives have included a member mentoring program and an interview prep program for those looking to advance in the agency. Weekly virtual chats and a quarterly newsletter ensure our veteran, military spouse, and supportive colleagues stay connected. #TeamUSPTO #DEIA #Veterans #MilitarySpouses #DEIASpotlight
