Congenital syphilis is an infection in babies who were born to a mother infected with syphilis—a sexually transmitted infection that can cause serious health problems without treatment. This infection can be severe, disabling, and even life-threatening to babies. That's why it's important to be get screened for syphilis and get treatment right away if needed. Syphilis is curable with the right antibiotics from a healthcare provider and this can prevent infections in babies. We encourage providers to screen for syphilis routinely in individuals who are pregnant.
