A new multimedia resource aimed at combating the shortage of Black men in #science, #technology, #engineering, and math (#STEM) fields launched recently at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As the shortage of Black men in STEM remains a dire challenge in the United States — according to 2022 statistics from the National Science Foundation (NSF), only 2% of STEM-field graduate students were Black men — the new Black Males in Engineering (BME) project aims to offer a pragmatic path forward. The project, led by School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty member Brian A. Burt, Ph.D., provides a robust online resource of #research-backed methods for supporting Black boys and men in STEM from primary school through doctoral studies. The resources include a video series and an accompanying set of interactive handouts with guided questions for key audiences, including parents, K-12 teachers, and college advisors. “We hope BME will provide support and a path forward for parents and caregivers, as well as teachers, advisors, peers, and students themselves on how to correct inequitable access to careers in science and engineering,” Burt says. Strong performance in the categories of teaching and research environment helped the University of Wisconsin-Madison rise to 56th in the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings released last week. This marks a two-year surge for UW in the rankings, thanks also to the #university’s patents and growing research expenditures. “UW–Madison fosters a research environment that supports #innovation and drives discovery,” says Dorota Grejner-Brzezinska, UW–Madison vice chancellor for research. “As an institution, we also prioritize leveraging our research advances to help benefit society, as reflected by the high number of inventions patented by our researchers each year.” Article: 'Teaching, research lead UW to rise in worldwide rankings' https://lnkd.in/guqtApxG via UW–Madison #Wisconsin #clinicalresearch

UW Health patient Peg Cokins was one of the first to participate in a clinical trial at the UW Carbone Cancer Center to treat her bladder #cancer. She had such a good response to the treatment that she has been off of treatments since 2020! “It is why #clinicaltrials are so important for patients, it creates opportunities to bring them the most cutting-edge therapies,” said Dr. Joshua Lang, who oversaw the UW site for this trial. “Then, thankfully, we can get these amazing benefits like what happened for Peg.” Cokins was so grateful for the trial that she started a fundraiser in 2018 to celebrate her 70th birthday. In five years, the fundraiser has raised over $37,000 for cancer research. This year's event is happening on 10/20. The first patients will be seen at UW Health Eastpark Medical Center in just a few short weeks, and these patients will have even more seamless access to #clinicaltrials. At Eastpark, patients will have the ability to see multiple providers, utilize applicable services and access appropriate clinical trials during a single visit. “We aim to offer every patient the opportunity to participate in #clinicalresearch, should they choose to do so. The integration of research into standard care processes at Eastpark will help move us even closer to that goal by bringing research to the patient, rather than the patient to research.” - Elizabeth (Betsy) Nugent, chief clinical research officer, UW Health and the UW School of Medicine and Public Health Press Release: 'Eastpark Medical Center integrates clinical trials into patient care' https://lnkd.in/gFGKqJ-h via UW Health #university #Wisconsin #healthequity

"#AI will profoundly impact numerous industries, and #clinicalresearch is no exception to this technological shift. Industry leaders have focused on utilizing AI to improve clinical trial design, patient #recruitment, and #data quality. While these approaches are undoubtedly important, another area requiring attention involves actual trial operations. We believe that #technology should also be used to reduce the burden on study teams, whether at a clinical trial site, contract research organization, or study sponsor."
