The University of Washington's Formula SAE Electric Team
About us
Here at UWashington Formula Motorsports, we design, build, test and compete with an electric, formula-style racecar. Everything that our club produces is done entirely in-house. We produce our own designs, perform our own machining and manufacture our own carbon fiber parts. What does a typical team member look like? There is no simple answer, because we are a very diverse group! We have members from 10 different majors, including Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, and Computer Science & Engineering. We even have some Finance and Political Science majors. There are countless learning opportunities for members of our program; they gain valuable experience in design, manufacturing, testing, research, fundraising, management and more. In garnering these experiences, team members excel far ahead of their academic peers in practical engineering know-how. What is a Formula SAE car? A Formula SAE car weighs 350 to 450 lbs with horsepower figures ranging from 50-80 hp. The 0-60 MPH dash is in the mid 3-second range. The lateral acceleration of a FSAE car can be as high as 1.9 Gs with braking from 60 to 0 MPH in about 115 ft. These performance numbers will leave most street cars in the dust.

Hesse Mechatronics, Inc. has been one of our major partners, working with us in the unique process of wire-bonding the pouch cells that we use as part of our racecar's accumulator. They've also been incredibly helpful with the design feedback they've provided during the build of our battery pack—our car would not have performed as it did at competition this year without them. Thank you, Hesse, for visiting us again last week and providing us with valuable expertise on our upcoming build!

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved faculty advisor, Professor Ashley Emery. For the past 25 years, Professor Emery has been a guiding figure of our team's efforts and achievements. In celebration of his legacy, we invite you to watch this video tribute featuring memories and reflections from our alumni and engineers who have had the privilege of working closely with him. Professor Emery was more than just an advisor; he was a mentor, a friend, and a true champion of our team through every challenge. Having an advisor for 25 years is exceptionally rare, and Professor Emery’s long tenure has been huge in shaping the team throughout our 35-year history. Thank you, Professor Emery, for your unwavering dedication and inspiration. You will always be remembered and missed.

This year, Korry Electronics sponsored University of Washington’s Formula SAE Team! Student Engineers spent all year designing and building their car, with the final goal of racing and showing their hard work in MI at the Formula SAE Competition. That event was this past weekend, and we were thrilled to be able to attend and show our support for all their hard work! It was inspiring to see what time and dedication can do. We look forward to partnering with this team in the future, and can’t wait to have some of their team members on our staff this year as interns! https://lnkd.in/g2pSbXNV Go Huskies!

75 teams, and one holds the fastest lap: UW Formula Motorsports (UWFM). The registered student organization's T35 electric racecar snatched the top time in the endurance event at the Michigan Formula SAE Electric competition, bringing home 7th overall in North America! Congratulations! 🏆 The team competed against other universities in two categories: static and dynamic. In static events, the car is judged on design, business and cost analysis. In dynamic events, teams race against each other to see which car excels in acceleration, skidpad, autocross and endurance. UWFM is housed in ME and also includes team members majoring in University of Washington, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Washington Materials Science & Engineering and University of Washington - William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics. They work closely to design, build and test the racecar through CAD modeling, composites and parts manufacturing and electrical integration. Advisers from ME include Assistant Professors Aniruddh Vashisth and Shijing Sun. University of Washington College of Engineering

Some of our designs are impossible to create with traditional manufacturing methods. Thankfully, i3DMFG and their metal 3d printing technology allows us to turn our designs into reality. Their metal 3d printing has allowed us to make our topology optimized titanium uprights come to life, as well as making our new and improved cooling jackets into a reality.

We’ve been swearing by LEMO GROUP’s military specification connectors. Their convenient installation, easy waterproofing, and high current capabilities gives us ultimate wire organization. This year, we’re using Lemo’s high-power connectors for our three-phase interlocks, which keep wires compact and are much easier to install and depin when necessary. Thank you, Lemo!
