It is an absolute honor to hear that our project - Midtown Union - has been awarded best project in the Residential/Hospitality category by Engineering News-Record Southeast! Midtown Union is a two million square foot mixed-use development constructed over an 8.5-acre site in Midtown Atlanta. The award-winning tri-tower project includes a 28-story office tower, a 27-story apartment tower, and a 14-story hotel tower. Incorporated into the towers, the development also includes 50,000 sf of street-level retail and two parking podiums with 1,900 spaces and topped with two outdoor amenity decks. U+C served as the structural engineer for the entire project, including the interior fit ups. With very tight design and construction schedules during the Covid pandemic, this development was completed ahead of schedule and within budget despite many design and construction challenges. It has become a new landmark for the city of Atlanta that provides an energetic, innovative, and productive environment for people to work, live, shop, dine and relax.

Mission critical projects present unique challenges that Uzun + Case has been meeting for over 30 years. Our industrial experience includes manufacturing plants, data centers, distribution centers, chemical plants, aircraft hangers, power plants, and warehouse facilities. For every project, we consider multiple framing schemes to determine the best design to fit the project’s requirements and construction schedule. During construction, rapid feedback to issues and quick shop drawing turnaround support an aggressive construction schedule. Our industrial portfolio includes design and construction administration of large-scale projects and mid-scale renovations for major corporate clients. Unique designs have included tornado hardened facilities, corporate data centers, enhanced construction tolerances for specialty equipment, accelerated design and construction schedules, and coordination with international equipment suppliers for specialty platforms and housings.

We have over 30 years of experience designing a wide variety of imaginative structures using innovative material technologies. Some of our most exciting work includes the creative endeavors we pursue with material scientists, architects, and artists across the country. These works include sculptures, monumental stairs, expressive pedestrian bridges, and community locales. Our design process always begins by closely collaborating with the creative team. Finite element analysis models are used to review complex geometries and provide the most economic structural frame. If applicable, we oversee mock-ups and fabrication, particularly for sculptures. We continue providing our expertise through construction, and we provide collaborative design solutions if unexpected complexities arise. The results are impactful, graceful builds that add unique spirit to their communities.

This past weekend, Uzun+Case joined 45 other companies in participating in Perkins&Will's annual backpack bash! Together, over $49,000 was raised in order to give school supplies to local elementary schoolers in need. Our engineers really appreciated the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of so many children!

Yesterday was National Intern Day, and we wanted to honor all of the interns who make our workplace complete! Thank you so much for all of your hard work, and we know you will all have an incredibly successful journey in engineering, at Uzun + Case or elsewhere!

U+C supports mass timber and wood construction as a critical component of sustainable construction. Our timber projects have won multiple awards and recognitions at state and national levels. Our projects have also achieved LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge certifications.  We have a longstanding history of successful collaboration with architects, owners, and contractors on timber projects. Our expertise spans a wide range of timber design including mass and heavy timber construction, light-framed wood construction, certified wood and salvaged lumber construction, and heavy timber trusses. Our experience also includes mixed-material construction combining both timber and steel framing. By utilizing timber’s compressive and bending strength with steel’s superior tensile strength, our framing systems efficiently integrate the materials into a sound structural framing system with reduced material usage.

U+C has an extensive portfolio of science and technology projects for both private and public clients. Our completed projects have included interdisciplinary laboratories, specialty laboratories, vivariums, microscopy spaces, surgical centers, teaching labs, robotics labs, and research centers. These dynamic projects give U+C the chance to exercise our creative collaboration and design skills to meet the architectural vision and unique programming requirements entailed by each venture. For each project, we develop and test multiple structural schemes to achieve optimal efficiency. We also conduct vibration analysis to accommodate any sensitive equipment and ensure occupant comfort throughout the facility.  We have completed renovations, expansions, and new construction within this sector, and many are award winning projects.
