Congratulations to Joanna Reynolds, RN, Postpartum, S5A, The Valley Hospital Daisy Award winner for June, presented by The DAISY Foundation. An excerpt from Joanna's nomination reads: “I never expected to have to face the possibility of losing my newborn baby boy. Thanks to the amazing nurses and doctors who acted quickly, I got to leave the hospital with my son alive and well... My nurse Joanna was in the OR, and I know she had a major role in resuscitating my baby." "The code was called quickly and the staff that showed up worked quickly to intubate my baby. I wish I knew everyone’s name so I could thank them individually. After my son was successfully resuscitated, Joanna made sure I was ok. She updated me on the status of my baby in the NICU immediately following. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but my husband and I were so scared and just having that little confirmation that our child was ok was one of the biggest reliefs of my life. I was lucky enough to have Joanna as my nurse for two shifts. She was responsive and made sure all my needs were met. She even checked on my son in the NICU. There are good nurses and then there are great nurses. I truly feel that Joanna has exemplified the meaning of being a nurse with both compassion and empathy. Thank you all for everything you do. If it wasn’t for the wonderful nurses, I don’t know if my son would be alive today.”

The Valley Hospital Foundation has dedicated the Holden Orthopedic Unit at The Valley Hospital in honor of Doug Holden, MD, orthopedic surgeon; his wife, Dr. Jean Weng Holden; and their children, Alexandra, Austin, and Samantha. The 16-bed orthopedic unit is committed to the care of patients who are experiencing conditions affecting their bones or who have undergone orthopedic surgery. As a member of Valley’s medical staff for more than 20 years, Dr. Holden has dedicated his career to the treatment of these patients. The Holdens’ generous gift in support of Valley’s Serve. Care. Transform. campaign speaks to their family’s commitment to their community, as well as to the value and confidence they place on the services that Valley provides. We are grateful to the Holdens for their generosity, friendship, and support of Valley’s future.

Amid rising national wait times for patients to obtain an appointment with a cardiologist, Valley’s cardiovascular service line is committed to making access easier and faster for our patients. With an extensive network of offices—in northern New Jersey as well as Midtown Manhattan—and a promise to schedule appointments within 72 hours—or even same-day when needed—we have reduced our average wait time for an appointment from 12.9 days in 2023 to just 4.4 days in 2024. We are actively measuring patient feedback on appointment accessibility and holding our leadership accountable for improvements. A journal article co-authored by Eleonora Teplinsky, MD, Head of Breast and Gynecologic Medical Oncology at Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care, was recently published in The Oncologist. The article addresses the lack of attention to sexual health side effects in women with cancer. The research team highlights how these side effects, which can be life-altering, are seldom discussed by oncology teams despite clinical guidelines from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) recommending assessments and interventions. The authors suggest that social media can be a valuable tool for raising awareness, providing support, and improving communication on sexuality and cancer care, especially for younger patients.
