Happy Halloween! 🎃 Spooky fact about food waste in the U.S.: in 2022, methane emissions from surplus food represented 14% of total U.S. methane emissions, comparable to the emissions of 26 million cars in a year. (Source: ReFED). Mitigating surplus food emissions is crucial to our planet's future, and solutions like anaerobic digestion will be key players. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eHVNvpAp

We're thrilled to have reached another significant milestone in our commitment to reducing emissions throughout our operations and value chain. Yesterday, our VP of Corporate & Government Affairs, Dan Wygal, had the honor of joining our partners at Vanguard Renewables, along with TotalEnergies, the Moyer Family, and policymakers, for a groundbreaking ceremony at Oakmulgee Dairy Farm in Amelia County, Virginia. This partnership marks a pivotal moment as we secure a long-term supply of high-quality renewable natural gas from three on-farm anaerobic digester facilities across the U.S., thanks to our collaboration with Vanguard Renewables. Over the next 15 years and beyond, AstraZeneca will utilize this renewable natural gas to power our U.S. research and manufacturing sites, propelling our efforts toward global decarbonization.

Big things are happening in Virginia—starting from the ground up! 🇺🇸 TotalEnergies and Vanguard Renewables, a portfolio company of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), have broken ground on the Oakmulgee Dairy Farm Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) project in Amelia Court House, Virginia. 💡 This project will generate over 259,000 MMBtu of RNG annually, transforming 105,000 tons of food and beverage waste into sustainable energy via an anaerobic digester. Even more exciting? The RNG produced will help power AstraZeneca's Maryland biopharmaceutical facilities! 💡 The Oakmulgee project is part of a larger partnership between TotalEnergies and Vanguard Renewables to scale up #RNG production across the U.S. 👏 Together, we’re advancing 10 projects with a total capacity of 0.8 TWh—and a potential pipeline of 60 future projects! ➡️ Learn more in the press release: https://lnkd.in/ePc_BGqx #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Biogas #RNG #TotalEnergies

In the newest ReFED study, they highlight recycling infrastructure that diverts organics from landfill as being able to have a significant impact on methane reduction, specifically "centralized and community recycling solutions such as composting and anaerobic digestion." Scaling up this infrastructure is key. At Vanguard Renewables, we have six operating anaerobic digestion facilities, three under construction, and more in development across the country. We're scaling up - join us! ♻️ Read the report: https://lnkd.in/ecGYG4qw

Anaerobic digestion is relatively new to the U.S., but has long been prevalent in other countries; Germany alone has nearly 10,000 anaerobic digesters. Anaerobic digestion is a sustainable solution that keeps organic waste out of landfills and methane out of the atmosphere, while producing renewable energy for businesses, institutions, and more. ⚡ Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eHVNvpAp
