About us
Our goal is to bring together clinicians, technicians, and students from all specialties and styles of veterinary practice who share a common passion for the use of point of care ultrasound. Our mission is to promote the safe and effective use of veterinary POCUS and increase its use in all practice settings, by all levels of users, and improve training programs and standards of care in the application of veterinary POCUS. We support further research exploring and validating the application of clinical veterinary POCUS by specialists and non-specialists alike as a safe evidence-based practice, and support the development of innovative ultrasound techniques and education methods to improve veterinary patient care. We hope to encourage and support veterinarians and related health care professionals to integrate and utilize veterinary POCUS with success and confidence. We proudly encourage novices, faculty, and students who have a desire to increase their ultrasound confidence to ask questions, challenge and hopefully embrace veterinary POCUS. We are hoping to be able to sponsor veterinary POCUS research projects and workshops in the future.

🫀 Standardizing Cardiac POCUS Nomenclature 🐈 🐕 A new statement from a multi-specialty writing group, published in September 2024, highlights the need for consistent terminology in cardiac point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) practices. 📑 The recommendations focus on unifying the diverse and often confusing terminology used across specialties, ensuring safer and clearer communication in both academic and clinical settings. By standardizing the nomenclature, the field can streamline research, improve patient care, and adapt to emerging technologies. This article is an important read for anyone involved in cardiac care and ultrasound diagnostics. Don’t miss out, it’s open access! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/djSRnwnc #CardiacPOCUS #Ultrasound #EVECCS #CriticalCare #VECCUS

Hélène Casalta obtained her PhD yesterday with her work on shock in calves. Not knowing anything about bovine medicine, I was excited to see how she applied point of care ultrasound in their shock patients. Congratulations Hélène on the work presented, which I hope will only be the start to future collaborative projects with Bart Pardon and other leaders in the field of bovine pocus.

VECCUS Consensus Statement Update: Expert Panel Selected! Dear colleagues, We are thrilled to announce that the VECCUS Consensus Statement is advancing as planned. After a thorough selection process, we have successfully formed expert panels for all five key domains: - POCUS of the Pleural Space and Lung - POCUS of the Cardiovascular System (including fluid status and responsiveness) - POCUS of the Abdomen - POCUS Guided Procedures - POCUS of the Neurological and Ocular System A heartfelt thank you to all the specialists and experts who volunteered their time, expertise, and dedication to this critical project. Your involvement is invaluable in shaping the future of veterinary POCUS and emergency care. The next step in the process will be the initiation of the Delphi method, where our expert panelists will begin reviewing key statements. We look forward to working together over the coming year to achieve consensus and finalize the statement for publication. Stay tuned for further updates, and once again, thank you to our experts for their ongoing commitment to advancing veterinary medicine! Sincerely, VECCUS & VECCUS Steering Group #VECCUS #EVECCS #POCUS

🐶 A recent canine study from August 2024, evaluated the accuracy of ultrasound for diagnosing hip luxation in dogs presenting with hind limb lameness. 🦴 The study enrolled 24 dogs, revealing that ultrasonography demonstrated high accuracy, ranging from 84.2% to 100% for detecting luxation and 80.6% to 98.1% for diagnosing the direction of luxation. Findings indicated substantial interevaluator agreement and almost perfect agreement with radiographs for diagnosing osteoarthrosis. This highlights the reliability of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool for hip luxation and related conditions. This is a very interesting reading, so have a look, it's open access! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d5tgm5WR #VECCUS #POCUS #EVECCS

🐈 A study from June 2024, evaluated thoracic point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) versus radiography (TXR) for diagnosing injuries in trauma-affected cats. 😺 The study involved 111 cats, with 74.4% showing positive results for thoracic injuries, most commonly pulmonary contusions. 🫁 Findings showed moderate agreement between POCUS and TXR for overall injuries, with cats’ positive on POCUS having higher trauma scores. This suggests thoracic POCUS is a reliable alternative to TXR, especially for severely injured cats. As someone who works a lot with trauma cats, this is something that you must read, and its open source! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dPxZYH9u #POCUS #VECCUS #EVECCS

Dear colleagues, A Consensus Statement on Veterinary Point-Of-Care UltraSound (POCUS) is being prepared (with the goal of publishing results in the scientific literature), by the VECCUS (Veterinary Emergency Critical Care UltraSound) Interest Group, under the umbrella of EVECCS (European Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society). A Steering Group composed of Søren Boysen, Angela Briganti, Simon Cook, Teresa DeFrancesco, Marc Seitz, Yu Ueda and Kris Gommeren is preparing the key statements to send to a group of veterinary POCUS experts and key opinion leaders. The Consensus Statement will focus on five domains: - POCUS of the Pleural Space and Lung - POCUS of the Cardiovascular System (including fluid status and responsiveness) - POCUS of the Abdomen - POCUS Guided Procedures - POCUS of the Neurological and Ocular System The VECCUS Consensus Statement Steering Group is therefore actively seeking experts that are willing to collaborate on this project. Experts will be invited to review statements, seeking consensus via the Delphi method, allowing sufficient time to answer during each round. The time commitment to complete the Delphi process is expected to take roughly a year, with several rounds of statement review, and updated details following each round, until consensus is reached or a failure to reach consensus is determined. Further information will be provided once the composition of the expert panel for each domain has been finalized. To be considered an expert, both of the following requirements will need to be met: - Have published scholarly activities related to POCUS (book chapters, abstracts, scientific studies, etc.) and/or lectured on POCUS. - Meet the definition of being a specialist in any of the following fields (Emergency and Critical Care, Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Cardiology or Diagnostic Imaging), or having completed a PhD or equivalent knowledge and training in the appropriate domain (please list specific training and date of completion). (Applications will be evaluated by the steering committee using a scoring rubric to rank candidates within each domain, also considering diversity and backgrounds of the applicants to achieve a balanced group of panelists) If you are interested in applying to be an expert panelist please complete the form below and indicate which domains you would like to volunteer (you may select as many domains as you like, however experts will only be assigned to a maximum of two domains depending on the number of applications received). https://lnkd.in/dTwYZyN8

🐶 New retrospective canine POCUS study – released in May 2024! 📊 🔬 Retrospective evaluation of a right heart parameter score in the assessment of precapillary pulmonary hypertension in dogs (2017-2021): 135 cases 📚 The objective was to determine if emergency and critical care residents can identify moderate to severe precapillary pulmonary hypertension on cardiologist-obtained cineloops using a pulmonary hypertension score (PHS) and report the interobserver variability of the PHS. 💡 From 2017 to 2021, 135 dogs were evaluated, highlighting the accuracy of PHS in detecting PCPH. Emergency and critical care residents effectively identified moderate to severe PCPH in dogs using PHS on cardiologist-obtained cineloops, with good to excellent interobserver agreement. 📎 https://lnkd.in/dxTM226s POCUS to live, live to POCUS! #EVECC #POCUS #VECCUS
