This year's event was notable for combining efforts with the HERETIC conference, further promoting research on trauma-induced coagulopathy and resuscitation strategies. A huge milestone for Velico, and fantastic to see our development technology embraced by the stellar team at NHSBT in the UK. Thanks to all teams involved in making this happen.
Take a sneaky peek at the first unit of dried plasma to be manufactured in the UK for many decades. It’s a product of the first commercial installation of the Velico Medical, Inc. On Demand spray dried plasma system anywhere in the world. This is part of a programme to set up, validate and conduct an NHSBT-led clinical trial of spray dried plasma, funded by UK Ministry of Defence, so we can work out how to get plasma to wounded soldiers who need it. The Ministry of Defence’s Blood Far Forward programme aims to deliver blood and plasma within 30 minutes of injury to soldiers in active warzones. Quite a moment for us all here to get to this point, but also for our collaborators @ Velico Medical who have spent over a decade of R&D on it. Really apt that this is in Cambridge, as did you know the UK was at the forefront of supplying dried plasma in World War II for the Allies? Back then, we prepared pools of hundreds of donations using industrial plant, storing them all in glass bottles. Now we will have single units of spray dried plasma, stored in a blood bag. They can be reconstituted in a matter of minutes, by adding water. A new spray dried plasma – which helps the blood to clot – will decrease the Army’s reliance on frozen plasma which has to be thawed, taking longer to administer, and could be used by UK Air Ambulances in the future. It is expected the resulting product will also benefit the NHS. Australia, Middle East & Europe in 7 days! This week was all about the significant Military needs for urgent innovation in blood products. Thankfully, Velico has made significant progress in this area and shared that message with no fewer than 50 global Military leaders in one week. Dr. Andre Cap and I both gave addresses to the ICMM world congress in Brisbane and the response was huge.
