In September of 2023, the California Legislature authorized Cal/OSHA, to amend the California Labor Code to include workplace violence prevention and reporting as part of employers’ workplace injury prevention program requirements. The new workplace violence prevention requirements expand workplace violence prevention program requirements to ALL employers within California, with minimal exceptions. The new requirements are in effect as of July 1, 2024. The clock is ticking if you’re not up to speed and in compliance with Cal/OSHA’s workplace violence prevention program requirements. Blake McGowan, CPE provided insight on the costs of known and unknown #MSD risk at #NSCExpo. He explained that “when people focus on the cost of a return on investment, it devalues the benefit. It’s important to identify the benefit prior to the cost.” And also pointed out that “there’s an opportunity, as safety professionals, to communicate to leadership that safety isn’t a cost - it’s a benefit to the organization.”

Blake McGowan, CPE participated in a panel discussion on #MSD prevention in regards to #DEI and non-physical factors with Julia Abate and Paige DeBaylo, PhD. Blake referenced a recent study, stating that physical risk factors account for 37% of the risks that lead to a MSD, which makes it increasingly important to take a holistic view of addressing MSD prevention and reduction, as well as empower future workforces to be actively involved in risk mitigation efforts.
