My main Samsara Beyond takeaway from speaking with over a dozen fleets there? Driver comms remains a Wild West with no clearly established best practice. 🔑 Today’s driver comms entail some hodgepodge of VOIP, mobile phones, tablets, SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram Messenger, ELD messaging, TMS app-messaging, walkie-talkie style apps, and Microsoft Teams / Slack. Like snowflakes, (the nature kind not the social media insult kind), no two fleets seem to be alike on comms. 🔑 <10% had their comms setup unified and integrated with their ELD. 🔑 Operations teams texting truck drivers in the field, and the implied risk of texting-and-driving, remains widespread and has a don’t-ask-don’t-tell quality to it. Inward facing cameras + AI may mitigate texting-and-driving risk but is no silver bullet. 🔑 ELD Messaging is more often a peripheral channel for occasional broadcasts (e.g. safety alerts, training reminders) than a central comms channel. Kudos to the Samsara team for a top-tier conference with countless passionate customers who were leaned in and ready to innovate. In trucking operations, unforeseeable exception events can be a daily occurrence. When drivers text information to dispatch that warrants attention from safety, billing, customer service, or maintenance, dispatch can now easily @mention their teammates to bring attention to the right people and make sure no incident falls through the cracks. Internal comments serve to register key information in context of the driver conversation without triggering a text to the driver, such as documenting trainable incidents or broader internal collaboration.
