We are now closer to obtaining justice for 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya, who was brutally shot in the back of the head by former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr during a traffic stop in April 2022. A judge denied Schurr's legal team's motion to dismiss the case on the grounds of governmental immunity, and our case now continues its path toward trial. As a result of a thorough investigation, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald has charged former Huron Valley Schools substitute teacher Timothy Daugherty for the sexual abuse against multiple young students at Spring Mills Elementary School. Jacqueline Francis of WDIV Local 4 News/ClickOnDetroit shared Ven's reaction to Daugherty's six counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, and gave an update on our upcoming civil lawsuit to fight for the families impacted. #VenFights

On Wednesday, our chief appellate attorney, Chris Desmond, presented oral arguments before the Michigan Court of Appeals, urging the reinstatement of our civil case against Oxford Community Schools and several employees. Chris emphasized new, critical evidence that was overlooked when the lawsuit was dismissed in March 2023, strengthening our clients' case as we push toward trial. The tragic 2021 shooting at Oxford High School continues to cast a long shadow. In addition to recent pressure from citizens and lawmakers to revisit the investigation and examine law enforcement’s response during the shooting, this week, the civil case against Oxford Community Schools and several OCS employees moves to the Michigan Court of Appeals. Ven Johnson Law’s Chief Appellate Attorney Chris Desmond will be there to present oral arguments addressing the ruling previously handed down by an Oakland County Circuit Court judge. “On behalf of the Sterling family, we, of course, will continue to support the criminal prosecution of Keely for killing an unarmed Samuel Sterling, irrespective of the forum in which it takes place.” WOOD TV8 shares a statement from Ven following Monday's ruling that the case against former Michigan State Police Det. Sgt. Brian Keely, who is facing second-degree murder charges in the death of Samuel Sterling, will be moved to federal court.
