National Alliance to End Homelessness Capitol Hill Day is one of the most important ways to engage in federal advocacy to help end homelessness. Through face-to-face meetings with Members of Congress and their staff, you have an opportunity to establish and build relationships with Congressional offices, educate elected officials on success and progress at home, and encourage them to work in support of policy initiatives to eliminate homelessness. Managing Director, Jessica Rice and Mecklenburg County service providers arrived at the office of Senator Thom Tillis and Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. to discuss the needs of NC Veterans.

Two years ago I met Daniel Conway as he was a new peer support specialist within my organization. From the moment I met him, his passion for justice involved individuals shined through. Today while I was in DC at this year’s #NCHV conference, we had the privilege of watching a Veteran who received services with Veterans Services of the Carolinas graduate from the FIRST graduation of the Onslow County Veterans Treatment Court! I’m so proud to not only call Daniel my friend but a colleague in this space.

To most Americans, Memorial Day is an abstract concept, while many Veterans live with the memory of their fallen comrades on a daily basis. This year in honor of Memorial Day, Veterans Services of the Carolinas feel privileged to honor a fallen Marine, husband and father: SSgt. Javier Ortiz Rivera was born 09/07/1984 in Cayey, Puerto Rico. His family moved to Rochester, NY in 1990, and Javier enlisted in the Marine Corps in July of 2002. He completed boot camp at Paris Island, SC and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines. His primary MOS was 0331 (machine gunner). Javier deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom while serving with 2/6 Upon completion of his tour of duty with 2/6, he was assigned to School of Infantry East as a combat instructor. Javier was assigned to 1st Battalion 8th Marines in 2009. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in September 2010. Javier was killed in action on November 16, 2010. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor for his heroism. Javier was married and had three children. He was funny, hard working, compassionate, and a man of faith. His wife, Veronica, and children, Alyssa Andrew, and Anthony have made every effort to ensure he is never forgotten and his memory and legacy live on. They ask that you please speak his name and share his story. Our offices are closed today, we wish everyone a relaxing but reflective Memorial Day and hope you take a moment to learn more about fallen service members in your communities.
