    Guests often arrive early and try to check in when their room isn't ready. In the past, this was a pain and added to front desk congestion. Today, it adds no time for the guest or staff and even opens the door to increased upsells. OLD In the past, when a guest tried to check in before their room was ready, they were told to come back at the official check in time. They had to stand in line a second time, show their ID again, and get a room key hours later. NEW Today, thanks to Virdee technology, the process is much simpler. Guests check in on their phone before arriving. If their room is not ready, they are notified that they'll receive a message once it is. Once the room is ready, the digital room key is immediately available, or they can stop by a lobby kiosk to pick up a key card. All of this happens without any staff interaction. But wait... there's more! 1. Should the guest go to the front desk to check in, staff can enroll them into Virdee's Room Ready flow, and the system takes it from there. 2. The hotel can choose to charge an early check-in fee to provide the guest a room before the official check-in time. 3.     Prepare for the new type of road warrior. Business travel is changing, and that means changes to how busy travelers use hotels. A recent Skift article talks about how business travel is changing from red-eye flights and one-after-the-other meetings to a more structured approach that focuses on the wellbeing of the traveler. People are more conscious than ever about their health and are less willing to sacrifice their health when it comes to business travel. Hotels are paying attention with more fitness-oriented options on menus and better-equiiped gyms. Extended stay hotels are also in high demand due to this shift in travel. According to the article, 60% of business travelers extended their trips for leisure purposes, increasing the number of nights of the average stay. There has also been an increase in longer-term, project-based travel. Along with this increase in demand come challenges in getting guests checked in, addressing their questions, supplying amenities, and generally making them feel welcome.     Virdee's VP of marketing, David Schnepp, recently flew Alaska Airlines and experienced the new contactless check-in process, and there's a lot hotels can learn from it. Alaska is a pioneer in self-service technology. It was the first airline to introduce self-service check-in kiosks about 25 years ago. Now, the company is transforming its check-in process again, making it as contactless as possible. Guests check in via mobile before heading to the aiport. Bag tag kiosks using iPad Pro's and staff armed with iPad Mini's for additional support make the process smooth and efficient. Virdee's own self-service check-in technology functions similarly. Guests check in via mobile before heading to the hotel. Upon arrival, if they have a mobile key, they can head straight to their room. If the guest prefers a key card, they can print on in seconds using the lobby kiosk. If they need assistance, a guest ambassador can help. Even ordering in-flight food on Alaska flights is done beforehand via mobile, along with choosing seats and other upgrades. Similarly, guests using Virdee technology can order room service, choose room upgrades, and pay for things like early check-in and late check-out, right on their phone. Want to learn more?
