Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has proposed a statewide research network to drive more resources toward biotechnology, life sciences, and pharmaceutical manufacturing—dubbed Virginia’s Research Triangle. The $96.4 million proposal is modeled after North Carolina’s research hub, with a stronger focus on translational work. Youngkin hopes to attract and retain biotech companies and talent in Virginia by offering a lower cost of living and higher quality of life compared to other established research hubs. An estimated 70% of people globally experience a traumatic event during their lifetime, but only 5.6% go on to develop PTSD. Ananda Amstadter, PhD of Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine is looking into the biological factors that influence the development of PTSD between the sexes. Her research, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, seeks to understand why women report higher rates of PTSD development than men. The results could be critical in advancing sex-specific treatment methods, from more effective medications to improved psychosocial treatment. Learn more about Dr. Amstadter’s research at VCU’s blog (link in comments). - #VCCRN #virginiaclinicalresearch #clinicalresearch #clinicaltrial #clinicalresearcherresources #PTSD
