The vision of the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), in cooperation with the Board of Education, local school boards, and other partners, is to create an excellent statewide system of public education that equips all K-12 students with the knowledge and skills to excel in postsecondary education and careers and to become capable, responsible and self-reliant citizens. The mission of VDOE is to lead and facilitate the development and implementation of a quality public education system that meets the needs of students and assists them in becoming educated, productive and responsible citizens.

Humanities students in the Summer Residential Governor's School for Humanities program at Radford University take a playwriting class - the top six scripts are chosen and performed by theatre students. VDOE's Office of Advanced Learning attended the theatre showcase. Congratulations to the talented playwrights in the program.

VDOE's Office of Advanced Learning recently visited the Summer Residential Governor's School for Medicine and Health Sciences at the campus of Radford University. Students visited the Bradley Free Clinic in Roanoke and heard from the on-staff pharmacist and learned about the Hope Initiative, which is a nonprofit organization that connects individuals struggling with addiction to community resources.

VDOE's Office of STEM recently visited students in the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars program. This program is a partnership between the Virginia Space Grant Consortium and NASA Langley Research Center with sponsorship from the Commonwealth of Virginia and industry. Students who complete the program earn college credit through a dual enrollment program with Virginia Peninsula Community College.

VDOE's Office of Advanced Learning recently visited the Summer Residential Governor's School program for Jefferson Lab Engineering on the campus of Williams & Mary. Students completed advanced activities such as programming a robotic arm to clean parts for the accelerator that are typically cleaned by hand. VDOE looks forward to visiting more exciting Governor's School programs this summer!

At the Region Seven Gifted Conference, VDOE's Director of the Office of Advanced Learning had a chance to connect with Ava and Cooper from Giles County Schools. These young innovators have invented an app named "Calm It" to decrease anxiety in middle schoolers and are regional winners of the Southwest Virginia Can Code Pitch Fest competition.
