  • Exciting progress in Virginia’s Brownfields revitalization efforts! Through a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Community-Wide Assessment Grant for States and Tribes (CWAGST) awarded to DEQ in FY22, we’re bringing new life to historic sites across the state. One recent example is the small community of Dante, Virginia, where DEQ partnered with the Community Design Assistance Center at Virginia Tech (CDAC) to reimagine a 1920s dry cleaner and surrounding sites, including a former bank that now serves as a coal and railroad museum. CDAC, part of the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design, employs talented students to provide planning and design services for communities and nonprofits, aligning with DEQ’s mission to support local redevelopment potential for Brownfields. Through this grant, DEQ is able to maintain and strengthen our partnership with CDAC, empowering communities to envision transformative futures for historic Brownfields sites. The redevelopment concepts generated bring both environmental and economic benefits, breathing new life into places like Dante and reinforcing their unique cultural heritage. DEQ is proud to support local communities in achieving their redevelopment goals!

Water Quality Monitoring and Planning Manager at VADEQ, Owner of Ruthless Handmade. Award winning filmmaker and writer, avid fly angler.

I started at Tidewater VADEQ about 17 years ago as A Water Quality Monitoring Specialist. Before that, I was in Fisheries Managment Specialist with VMRC. In 2022 I was promoted to the Technical Reviewer position, and in October of 2023 I was promoted to the Water Quality Monitoring and Planning Manager. I miss the field but in the last year, I have gained a better understanding of the division I lead. The best part is the people, I get to work with some great folks. I am especially appreciative of my current team, they truly love their work. I occasionally get some field work in and they maintain a safe and efficient program, and they enjoy it! They make being their manager a true pleasure and I would not be where I am without their support. We truly have the best jobs at VADEQ. Kudos to you all!

  • We have exciting news! As part of the Commonwealth’s enduring commitment to restoring the Chesapeake Bay, we have launched the innovative $20 million Pay-For-Outcomes Nonpoint Source Pollution Reduction grant program. Nonpoint pollution sources do not usually come from one place like a pipe, but instead runoff from larger areas and are the largest manageable sources of pollution entering the Bay. This one-year pilot program will provide payments based on the number of pounds of pollution actually removed or prevented. DEQ intends the Pay-For-Outcomes program will help identify cost-effective means of reducing nonpoint source pollution and encourage innovation. In doing so, Virginia will continue its commitment to improving the environmental quality of the Chesapeake Bay. Applications are due Feb. 3, 2025. An informational webinar will be held on Oct. 1 at 11 a.m. Additional information, including a link to register for the webinar, is available online: https://lnkd.in/eqqrwzHe
