Black History in Rail Transporation: During the period known as the Great Migration, which spanned from 1916 to 1970, over 6 million African Americans relocated from the rural southern regions to urban areas in the North, Midwest, and West. This movement was driven by the pursuit of better economic prospects and the desire to flee oppressive segregationist legislation.
