Data-driven optimism from our founder and managing principal, Jon Commers: Downtowns are "poised for a reinvention and an opportunity to become more vital than they’ve been in 75 years. No question." Thank you to Katie Galioto and Jim Buchta of the The Minnesota Star Tribune for outlining the state of downtown transition, including hurdles, and initiatives including the interdisciplinary collaboration, #CityShift. The ingredients are all present, but the recipe has fundamentally changed. We're committed to continue supporting progress with data analysis, development and policy expertise, and strategy. #Downtown #CRE #FutureCities #Conversion #MixedUse #MixedUse #MixedUse

As a team we are always in pursuit of ways that information can be more effectively shared to generate better outcomes. The idea of a Dewey decimal system for zoning codes is right up our alley! #Ontology
Earlier this month I was among the panelists for a convening at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis titled, "Reforming Land Use Regulation to Encourage Housing Supply." One of the ideas I offered, which has continued to arise in the weeks since, is the organization of municipal zoning codes in a form akin to the Dewey decimal system. Libraries vary in size and emphasis. Cities, library boards, schools and universities, and all kinds of other libraries develop their own collections. Still, each can be easily navigated because they are organized using a uniform structure for organizing titles and topics. Applying this approach to municipal zoning codes would allow much easier sharing of information about what can be built where under current rules, reducing cost and time delay involved in reusing a church building, adding a patio cafe, or building all forms of housing. The Minneapolis Fed's presenters and panelists shared all kinds of national and local research and experience; the video is below if you're interested. Otherwise, weigh in on the Dewey decimal system for zoning! #Zoning #LandUse #Housing cc: Libby Starling

Singapore's ambitious urban transformation continues on with the latest project announced for Henning Larsen to reimagine the surface streets of the North-South Corridor that connects the city to the Northern region, with the vision to turn it into a new "life reserve." The proposed plan includes the integration of public transport, active mobility, community-focused spaces, and greenery along the 21.5km corridor with the goal to relieve traffic, prioritise walking, cycling, and public transit, and to connect different cultural districts with new public spaces and greenery. Once completed, Singapore will be even closer to becoming a "City in Nature." Mission-driven programs and facilities, and community service: There's so much to love about the YMCA. We started working with YMCA associations in 2016 and are grateful to continue this work nationally, including recent engagements with ongoing clients at the YMCA of the Northern Sky in North Dakota and Minnesota, and New Jersey's YMCA of Greater Monmouth County. Inspired by the sports fields under London's Westway and retail shops under railway arches, the Bentway was created in downtown Toronto with walking and biking paths, gardens, and public art, transforming the underpass of the Gardinier Expressway that used to divide the local community from the waterfront. Since opening, it has hosted activities from outdoor yoga and block parties in summer to skating in winter, bringing vibrancy and togetherness to the community.
