Ever since my family’s home was affected by Hurricane Sandy over a decade ago, I have been glued to post-hurricane news coverage, especially as they have been increasing in frequency and hitting areas that have previously been shielded from the worst of these storms. One of the most interesting stories I came across post-Milton was how Tampa General was able to weather a four-foot storm surge in a low-lying area thanks to AquaFence. The 25-year-old company is not new to flood protection and has become a true global leader in the space, protecting more than $30 billion of real estate in the US alone. Their watertight fences withstand high winds and protect buildings from flooding, but critically, they go up quickly (think 100 feet of fencing in 30 minutes) and are reusable (up to 60 times). This kind of thoughtful design allows for hospitals, schools, and other forms of critical infrastructure to invest in long-term sustainability and risk mitigation so they can immediately focus resources on the care and support needed after a natural disaster. While I am excited about the potential we have for a greener future, I am also drawn to companies like AquaFence that are preparing us for the effects of climate change. Essentially, we need to mitigate and reduce the actions that contribute to a warming planet while developing innovative solutions that allow us to adapt to the realities we’re faced with now. More on AquaFence in the comments (including a cool video of it going up) and consider supporting hurricane relief efforts here:
