The CDC added a new diagnostic code, z51a, to the International Classification of Diseases list thanks to ground-breaking research from our Center for Home Care Policy and Research team and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. The new code aims to help providers monitor patients who've been discharged from hospitals for sepsis. The VNS Health study, led by Dr. Kathy Bowles, VP, Director of the Center for Home Care Policy & Research, analyzed over 165,000 sepsis survivors' cases and found that only 7% had sepsis noted in admission assessments. The research also identified risk factors sepsis survivors may face in readmission. “Our work has shown that timely attention by home care and outpatient clinicians is highly effective for sepsis survivors. It is critically important to communicate sepsis survivorship across transitions in care because among those readmitted from home health care, one-third occur in the first seven days.” said Kathy. “We are hopeful this new ICD code will direct the necessary attention to sepsis survivors and improve outcomes for the 1.7 million Americans who encounter sepsis each year.” Click below to read more the new code addition and how it can help reduce avoidable admissions. https://bit.ly/4dFo4Bi

Happy October! Today marks the start of Physical Therapy Month and Mental Illness Awareness Week — two topics which are near and dear to our hearts. To kick off the month, we're celebrating physical therapist David, who recently shared how he found his passion for PT! David shared, "Getting to know my clients, witnessing their growth, and seeing their happiness when they achieve small accomplishments are just a few of the rewards I enjoy. Like an onion, everything is layered…there’s always a new patient, a new set of health conditions, a new environment, and a new opportunity to help someone get over their personal obstacles — whatever they may be." David, thank you for your compassionate work and dedication. We love having you on our team! We thank Representative Ritchie Torres for leading congressional delegation in a bipartisan letter opposing proposed CMS Medicare cuts for 2025. The proposed cuts would negatively impact thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers' access to home health care. This proposed payment rule follows another troubling CMS reduction introduced in 2020. President and CEO Dan Savitt is concerned about how these changes would affect our neighbors and communities. “The proposed CMS Medicare cuts turn a blind eye to the essential needs of thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers. While more and more people are being referred to home health care, fewer are actually getting the care they need because of ongoing workforce shortages and ‘home health deserts’ where patients and communities are starved of critical services. VNS Health applauds Congressman Torres for his leadership and New York’s Congressional Delegation for coming together in a bipartisan call to reconsider these cuts. We also salute Leaders Schumer and Jeffries for their steadfast commitment to ensuring that seniors across the country have access to sustainable, quality home health care.” Read the full press release from Rep. Torres' Office: https://lnkd.in/e4sU7UmS
