In a commentary this week for Industry Dive, Voltus Chief Regulatory Officer — and longest-serving #FERC Chairman — Jon Wellinghoff teams up with former FERC Chairman Neil Chatterjee. In their piece, they make the case for accelerated implementation of FERC Order Number 2222, which they characterize as a readily available, bipartisan #energypolicy solution to the waning reliability and affordability of the grid. https://lnkd.in/dm5q7BKq

Voltus reposted this
"We can get the electricity we need without frying our planet" said the The New York Times a few months back. But...can we get the data we need to make the economics work? Certain obstacles to the #energytransition are more obvious than others, and sometimes it's the boring-seeming ones that are the most important to bring to light. Namely: one of the more significant (and most obscure) is the lack of access that consumers have to their own electricity consumption data — much less control over it. This is especially true for residential customers where installing third party metering is cost prohibitive. While many wouldn't think twice about this, it's critical to the deployment of #VPPs. The good news is we have the technology to liberate the data, give consumers greater discretion over their energy costs, and stand-up the resources needed to deliver the 21st century grid. But regulatory policy still needs to catch up. Voltus's Chief Regulatory Officer Jon Wellinghoff explains further in a recent Op-ed: https://lnkd.in/giTp2Kv9 Michael Murray Jen Downing Allison Bates Wannop
"incredible" "breathless" "astounding" "record shattering" "soaring" "mind blowing"...take your pick of the adjectives, but one thing it seems everyone can agree on is that our electricity grids are going to see [__insert here___] amounts of new load over the coming years based on electrification, EVs, and data center load growth. Thank you #NYT for explaining this so simply: "We need utilities to succeed now more than ever before. But the definition of success needs to evolve." There is a consumer revolution afoot...#energystorage #EVs and #smartthermostats are growing at record pace...so let's talk keep talking about increasing the utilitization and value of these customer-owned assets, not just building more stuff. #VPPs #DERs

The results of the PJM Interconnection capacity auction this summer — and the anticipated results of the upcoming auction in December, per Morgan Stanley — are underscoring the challenges for the U.S. power and utilities sector. Utilities, grid operators, federal and state policymakers — and consumers — are staring down a disconcerting mismatch in supply and demand. But as Voltus's President, Matthew Plante tells Paul Gerke from Renewable Energy World, #virtualpowerplants are not only proving capable of bringing balance to the grid, but also keeping prices stable and affordable for customers. https://lnkd.in/dqf9_iHq
Thank you to Paul Gerke for writing a thorough (and entertaining, right from the very first line) article about #PJM capacity prices, #virtualpowerplants, and utility data access (Hi, Michael Murray). Paul's article, which features enviable storage attach rate data from our friends at Sunrun Inc., is here: https://lnkd.in/eRFR_Dr4. As always, we at Voltus look forward to helping our customers and partners become part of the solution.
Can virtual power plants relieve PJM’s price problem?
