Five key takeaways of ExxonMobil Global Outlook : 1. All energy types will remain in the mix. 2. Renewables will grow the fastest. 3. Coal will decline the most. 4. Under any credible scenario, oil and natural gas remain essential. 5. Lower-carbon technology needs policy support to grow rapidly but ultimately must be supported by market forces.

#ammonia #shipping #decarbonization A recent MIT study has raised concerns about using ammonia as a marine fuel. The study found that burning ammonia creates harmful by-products like nitrogen oxides. These oxides can form fine particulate matter, which contributes to air pollution and pose health hazards. Without new regulations to control these emissions, switching the global fleet to ammonia could lead to more premature deaths. Prof Lynn Loo was interviewed by TradeWinds regarding this study in which she shared the following views: → Robust regulations will need to be in place to ensure operational safety and minimise negative environmental and health impacts. → To strengthen the study, which relied primarily on experimental ammonia combustion data, real-world data from ship trials would add granularity. → These learnings can help operationalize crew training, and develop safe handling procedures and emergency response plans to mitigate ammonia release. → Data from these pilots can help inform policy recommendations to mitigate the unintended release of ammonia and harmful pollutants that result from its use as a marine fuel. https://lnkd.in/gF7GNSZ5
