Our new website, Vydiant.com, is now live! The redesign better reflects Vydiant's mission and activities. We provide a direct link to subscribe to OneHealth Pro, our web-based application for querying our lifestyle factor - disease knowledge base. Our AI-NLP pipeline extracted directional relationships between >5000 lifestyle factors (diets, foods, nutrients, supplements, physical activities, social activities, social determinants of health, environment, and behaviors) and the 2,699 conditions in MeSH. That knowledge base powers the suggestions targeted to individuals in OneHealth Go, our iOS app. Thanks to our colleagues at 3Fold Communications, Angela Criser and Gordon Fowler, for their excellent design and work.
Our research enterprise has struggled with how to characterize participants in research studies and subsequent application of the results to real world populations. A group of editors of biomedical journals announced new practices for using race, ethnicity, and ancestry descriptors in genomics research (https://lnkd.in/dJSUZSrs). Their position was influenced by a 2023 report of a committee of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences was tasked with developing a framework on the use of population descriptors in genetics and genomics research (https://lnkd.in/dkS8uEr9). After a thorough review and discussion of terms used in genetic and genomic research, the committee proposes 13 recommendations and provide a decision tree for using population descriptors by different genomic study types. The committee also emphasized the importance of qualitatively and quantitatively measuring the environment to more completely understand health and disease phenotypes which result from complex interactions between gene – environment interactions. Environment is broadly defined in the committee’s view as social conditions (essentially social determinants of health) and built or physical factors (land use, green spaces, pollution, and among others). Their definition includes nutrition and the behaviors which affect health. Our teams have not only expressly supported this more comprehensive assessment of environment (PMIDs: 16277761, 19040372, 28300226, and 24363221) but designed and conducted nutrition intervention studies that attempted to more completely define participants genetic makeup and environment (PMIDs: 24879315, 24760553, 29368422, 34099811). Vydiant has developed the OneHealth ecosystem of healthware applications that summarize lifestyle factors that affect health and conditions (OneHealth Pro - https://lnkd.in/dnk2eVrm) and OneHealth Go (iOS) that captures dietary, physical, social, and stress patterns of individuals. Our team conducted a community based participatory research, multiple micronutrient intervention in children and teens that resulted in 11 separate publications (so far). Nutrients gave us the rare opportunity to review the main findings from these reports (Figure S1). This project was a part of a larger program conducted by our team over the past ~15 years (Figure S2). Unlike many large scale nutrition programs (e.g., EU-funded projects), this project was led by a single principal investigator (Jacqueline Monteiro, USP - Ribeirão Preto) and was generously supported by Nestlé Research.
