Gen. Sir John Moore describes British forces fending off a surprise attack from French soldiers during the Battle of Alexandria, which was a key battle in the French Revolutionary Wars that was fought on this day in 1801. It was the final significant engagement of Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt, effectively ending French ambitions in the region. It paved the way for British dominance in the eastern Mediterranean and solidified their strategic foothold in the Middle East.
