About us
The Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) operates under the delegated authority of the Washington Supreme Court to license the state’s nearly 40,000 lawyers and other legal professionals. In furtherance of its obligation to protect and serve the public, the WSBA both regulates lawyers and other legal professionals and serves its members as a professional association — all without public funding. The WSBA’s mission is to serve the public and the members of the Bar, to ensure the integrity of the legal profession, and to champion justice.

When I chair or speak at a CLE program, that usually means I think I know a fair amount about the topic addressed. Next month I'm taking a different approach. I know that asylum cases are important and that many detainees lack legal representation, but I know little else about asylum law. On November 13, I'll be co-chairing an online Washington State Bar Association program entitled "Representing Asylum Seekers in Immigration Detention – A Guide for New Practitioners and Pro Bono Volunteers." Unlike my co-chairs, I'll be offering the perspective of a lawyer who wants to help but doesn't know how, and I'll be asking lots of questions. Lawyers from the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project and other experts will supply the answers.

I'm late in sharing this article about Washington State Bar Association’s Inaugural Small Town and Rural (STAR) Practice Inaugural Summit, but in my defense, it was published last month while I was still on maternity leave! I am so proud to be a member of the STAR Committee and of the work we're doing to address legal deserts and improve access to justice in small and rural communities across Washington. I am also excited to partner up with Kevin Plachy and Merf Ehman to help plan next year's Summit, although past chair Laurie Powers left some pretty big shoes to fill! This work is timely with the partnership between Seattle University School of Law and Heritage University to establish a “Hybrid Hub" to help address the critical need for legal professionals in the area. #WSBA #AccesstoJustice #LegalDeserts
