The Association of Defense Communities (ADC) Installation Innovation Conference was this week in San Antonio. It’s so encouraging to see #militaryspouses having seats at these tables. So many of the voices on the panels in general and breakout sessions and the attendees were part of the #militaryspouse community. A huge thank you to ADC, military, DoD and community leadership for encouraging and expanding this representation, including the remarkable ADC Military Spouse Leadership Initiative cohort. A group of military spouses representing different stages, branches, geographies, and roles at the conference came together for community building the first night of the conference, and it absolutely set the tone for me for the rest of the event. I’m so grateful to this group of military spouses for showing up and being open to gathering. So often, we are focused on solving issues, it’s nice to also celebrate what’s working. For me, that’s community, inclusion, and connection. What do you love about this community?

On this day in 1944, Wilburn Ross performed the extraordinary actions during WWII for which he would later receive the Medal of Honor. After his company suffered devastating losses, with only 33 out of 88 men remaining, Ross positioned his machine gun at the front line, determined to hold back the advancing German forces near St. Jacques, France. Over five grueling hours, Ross fought off eight relentless attacks from an elite enemy battalion. Even when most of his comrades ran out of ammunition, he held his position, and as grenadiers crawled within yards of him, Ross continued firing with deadly accuracy. Against overwhelming odds, he killed or wounded at least 58 enemy soldiers, singlehandedly preventing a breakthrough. Ross’s courageous stand not only saved his fellow soldiers from destruction but also kept his post for a total of 36 hours, inspiring all those around him. Excited to be with #WDVA’s Combined Leadership Team today! It’s a day to connect agency-wide with leaders across all of our divisions and locations. It’s also a day to review, recap and #learn. I’m looking forward to delivering the next course of WDVA’s #leadership learning series. Todays #training focuses on #ReasonableAccommodation and the #Supervisors roles and responsibilities. The content is geared to provide our leaders information and resources to directly support staff who are experiencing barriers in their work. Investing in our staff’s #ProfessionalDevelopment is essential to the success of our organization - but also directly impacts the quality of care and service to those we serve.

Sights on Target!!! The veterans at Washington Soldiers Home enjoyed participating in the recent Paul Bunyan Rifle Range outings. They were excited to be able to shoot both rifles and pistols while receiving excellent instruction and safety assistance from the staff. Residents were enthusiastic to receive and display their targets at the end of the shooting rounds. A special shout out to the Paul Bunyan Rifle Range staff and volunteers who were cordial, patient, and knowledgeable with our residents in order to ensure a wonderful experience. Washington Soldiers Home residents look forward to returning to the Paul Bunyan Rifle Range in 2025 for more shooting range excitement!
