  • Earlier this week, the Cities of Poulsbo, Renton, Lake Forest Park, Ellensburg, and Walla Walla were recognized as prominent leaders of urban forestry initiatives. How inspiring it is to see Washington’s local communities promote climate resiliency within urban spaces! These are some great, actionable examples of addressing urban heat trap issues discussed by Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz two weeks ago. The Public Works Board (PWB) convened in beautiful Winthrop, WA and enjoyed an informative presentation by Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz and Policy Advisor Michael Liang pertaining to tree equity and urban forestry here in the Evergreen State! American Water Works, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S. serving over 14 million people across 14 states, announced on Monday that hackers had breached its computer networks and systems. The Camden, New Jersey-based company became aware of the unauthorized activity on Thursday. It took protective measures, including shutting down specific systems and pausing customer billing, ensuring no late charges would be applied during this period. While the company stated that its facilities and operations were not impacted, it is still investigating the full scope of the incident and is cooperating with law enforcement. This cybersecurity incident occurs amid growing concerns by U.S. officials about attempts by foreign actors to breach critical infrastructure networks. This story reminds me of a recent conversation with a rural water district. They were interested in using CTI to confirm that they hadn't experienced any historical data breaches they were unaware of and to check for any new breaches following a recent project with an engineering company to enhance their cybersecurity technologies and processes. After a quick review, we found that they were aware of all the past security incidents and that there were no current cyber threats. These are the kinds of demonstrations I enjoy. However, when I inquired about the engineering company they had hired to revamp their cybersecurity, the positive news turned negative. It turned out that the engineering company responsible for establishing and maintaining its cybersecurity had been breached, and neither the engineering company nor the water district had been aware of the breach. This is a reminder that when a company outsources work to a supplier, they do not outsource the associated risks. Instead, they inherit all the risks linked to their supply chain. https://lnkd.in/g73BV5VM
