As the fossil-fueled climate emergency causes more intense and frequent disasters—like the record-breaking back-to-back hurricanes Helene and Milton that have caused immeasurable devastation in the Southeast and Gulf Coast— FEMA has ever more work to do to help communities prepare for and rebuild after disaster strikes. However, the agency is instead exacerbating the dual climate and energy justice crises by investing billions in rebuilding the fragile fossil fuel status quo. That’s why the Center for Biological Diversity and 24 energy justice, consumer rights, and environmental organizations—including WE ACT for Environmental Justice , the Center for Popular Democracy, Climate Justice Alliance, Vessel Project of Louisiana and more—formally petitioned FEMA to build back fossil-free and work with frontline and environmental justice communities to deliver renewable, distributed, and climate-resilient energy infrastructure. You can read our Petition here: https://lnkd.in/gSsTK-if Every agency dollar that would have gone into rebuilding dirty fossil fuel infrastructure should be redirected toward sustainable and resilient solutions like community and rooftop solar, energy efficiency, and weatherization. This fundamental shift in agency funding priorities would cut down fossil fuel pollution and help facilitate the urgent transition to a just, resilient and renewable energy future. #environmentaljustice #climatejustice

  • ⚠️ With communities still reeling from the horror of #HurricaneHelene and #HurricaneMilton already causing devastation, we know these #UnnaturalDisasters are increasing due to the fossil-fuel driven #ClimateCrisis. So, are we doing enough to transition to clean energy? ⚡ What's Happening with Our Energy System? While the Biden Administration has invested more than any other in clean energy funds and innovation from legislation like the #InflationReductionAct (IRA), it does so while at the same time making the U.S. the number one exporter of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in the world. #LNG is over 90% methane, one of the most powerful greenhouse gases driving the climate crisis. LNG terminals are placed overwhelmingly in Black, Brown, and low-income communities. ❓ Is Anyone Fixing the Problem? A new bill (the Energy Permitting Reform Act [EPRA]) introduced in July would actually make the problem much worse. How? ❌ EPRA opens up even more LNG ❌ EPRA would also dramatically shorten the time available for the Department of Energy (DOE) to perform reviews of environmental and community impact for these projects ❌ EPRA mandates automatic approvals after a 90 day deadline - regardless of potential harm to these communities from these projects How Can You Help? ✅ Read our letter signed by 175+ orgs opposing EPRA (LINK IN BIO) ✅ Share this post ✅ Tell your reps you want more clean energy investments delivered on and a REAL end to fossil fuels

  • Register here: https://lnkd.in/emJUuRmt … Low-income communities and communities of color throughout New York State have historically been burdened by a disproportionate number of pollution-generating facilities 🏭☣️ … This inequitable siting has turned these communities into environmental sacrifice zones, with the cumulative impacts of these multiple sources of pollution exponentially harming residents’ health and wellbeing 😷 … The NY Cumulative Impacts Law S1317/ A1286, signed in 2022, is a landmark environmental justice legislation in addressing the environmental racism that has plagued communities for generations 📖 … Currently, DEC is in the rulemaking process for implementing this bedrock environmental justice law, which will go into effect in 2025. Advocates must be at the table at every step of the process. Join WE ACT for Environmental Justice, South Bronx Unite, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, and EarthJustice on October 16th at 1 pm for a virtual webinar to address these issues! ⚠️

  • *BREAKING NEWS* Over 175+ organizations share opposition to the Energy Permitting Reform Act (EPRA)! Advocates who have signed-on to a recent letter share urgent and specific concerns of frontline, environmental justice, as well as Tribal organizations and communities. In the letter's words, the bill would perpetuate unequal burden by fast-tracking fossil fuel projects using environmental justice communities as sacrifice zones, remove essential democratic processes to push back on harmful fossil fuel projects, and include many other dangerous elements of Project 2025. Learn more and share >> bit.ly/nodirtydeals Leslie G. Fields , Chief Federal Officer at WE ACT shared, "Energy policies must break the cycle of sacrificing our communities. Instead, we must collectively move forward towards a just and equitable clean energy future." This effort is led by WE ACT for Environmental Justice (@WEACT4EJ), GreenLatinos , Indigenous Environmental Network , and the Black Hive (@mvmnt4blklives).

  • ❓ Have you heard of the Energy Permitting Reform Act (EPRA) ❓ Introduced this July, the bill claims it would help “strengthen American energy security by accelerating the permitting process for critical energy and mineral projects" - but what would it really do? ❌ EPRA is a greenwashed #DirtyDeal that would continue to sacrifice #EnvironmentalJustice communities. Here's how: - EPRA would implement #Project2025 priorities including fast tracking #FossilFuel projects and undoing the Biden Administration’s pause on approving #LiquefiedNaturalGas (LNG) export projects which are overwhelmingly sited in environmental justice communities. - EPRA cuts judicial due process & public participation, shortening the time communities need to challenge harmful projects and weakening the primary legal way communities can voice their concerns. - EPRA increases burden on frontline and Tribal communities; as people of color disproportionately live near fossil fuel refineries, this bill locks in even more fossil fuel projects for decades and automatic DOE approval after 90 days of new LNG exports - regardless of potential harm. - EPRA's emissions models ignore localized pollution, water contamination, and financial hardship associated with fossil fuel infrastructure. ➡️ So what's the good news? Alternatives & Solutions Exist to Center Environmental Justice >> These bills - the A. Donald McEachin Environmental Justice for All Act & the Clean Electricity and Transmission Acceleration Act (CETA) - balance our need to rapidly scale up clean energy transmission and production while protecting communities. What can you do? ✅ Share this post and make sure people know the truth about EPRA + the importance of the #EJ4All Act & CETA ✅ Contact your reps and make your voice heard!

At our 2024 Climate Justice Forum, Rise highlighted how our industry can lead the path to a cleaner, more resilient energy future for New Yorkers. As former DEC Chair Basil Seggos put it: “Rise Light & Power is doing something that, historically, utilities did not do: engaging, creating positive change through meaningful authentic relationships, and providing that vision, which is community-based, to the people of the City of New York and the state of New York. That’s something we can be proud of.” With our community’s support, we’re ready to build a Renewable Ravenswood and secure our city’s clean energy future.
