August is also known as National What Will Be Your Legacy Month. When working with clients on their estate plans, advisors should help them understand it’s about more than just maximizing their inheritance and wealth. It’s about how they want to be remembered by those closest to them, the impression they want to leave behind. Here are some things advisors can share with their clients about why estate planning is more than just dollar values: 📚Organization Leaving a mess of stuff can contribute to the grieving process of your loved ones. Ensure they have a comprehensive list of your assets and how to access them. This is especially important with digital assets, like social media accounts, so they don’t have trouble gaining access. 👫Beneficiary Designations Many times, the last thing your family and loved ones will want to deal with after you pass is probate. Without clear instructions for what assets pass to whom, it can cause family squabbles and pricey probate proceedings. For some assets, you can name beneficiaries so that assets pass directly outside of probate. 🫰Non-Monetary Assets Some things are worth more than money (i.e. dad’s war medals). Help them think about family heirlooms or assets they have, and who may benefit the most from them—not monetarily, but emotionally. Money doesn’t remind anyone of their loved ones but a certain, treasured item may trigger happy memories. Did you know August is Make a Will Month? Will’s are often the most common document when people think about having an estate plan, but 68% of Americans still don’t have a will. 🤯 Here are 7 facts you may not know about wills: 👉Usually you need to be 18 to create a will, unless you’re an active duty member. 👉You can’t leave your assets to your pets. But you can leave instructions for their care. Just read about Leslie Ann Mandel who designated ~$100K for the care of her 32 cockatiels. 👉 A person responsible for someone’s death (i.e. they're murdered) usually cannot inherit their estate, even if named in the will. Still, this fuels the plot of endless murder mystery novels and films. 👉You typically need the original will for probate. If only a copy is available, the judge could assume the original was wilfully destroyed and is therefore invalid. 👉You can, and should, update and/or revoke your will when necessary. Moving states? Married or divorced? Have kids? Make sure your will is updated or it could cause headaches. 👉Wills don’t usually cover all types of assets, like retirement accounts and insurance policies. Make sure beneficiary designations are updated for those. 👉It can be important to specifically designate that the executor or personal representative of your will has access to your ‘digital assets’ (i.e. email or social media accounts) after your death. If your will does not specifically grant access, all the information could end up lost.
