The Western Museums Association (WMA) is a nonprofit, membership organization dedicated to serving museums, museum professionals, and related institutions by providing vision, enrichment, and intellectual challenge, as well as a forum for communication and interaction. Through training and educational programs, the WMA empowers the diverse museum community of the West to cultivate leadership and enable institutions to remain relevant in a dynamic world. Additionally, the WMA creates opportunities for its constituents to build skill sets to better serve their communities through their museums by providing professional development opportunities west of the Rockies, including in Alaska and Hawaii, the western Canadian provinces of Alberta, and British Columbia, among others. The WMA is a self-sustaining network of museum professionals strengthened by memberships (individual, institutional, and corporate), WMA's premier Annual Meeting, and valued partnerships.

The first of our Future Chats, a new series exploring museum trends via informal discussions, kicked off on Wednesday to explore Coping with Climate Risk. Participants joined Elizabeth Merritt, director of our Center for the Future of Museums, and guest speaker Marcy Rockman to explore how museums are impacted by climate change and how they can effectively manage these risks. One highlight of the discussion was how museums can address heat. Elizabeth posed these thought-provoking questions, which you can also apply to your discussions about other climate impacts: 🔹 How do you think about heat, what are your assumptions, what do you expect to hear about heat? 🔹 How are your assumptions about heat, “baked into” your organization—from operations to the physical infrastructure? 🔹 What are some tangible ways your organization can manage heat?
