Western States Center works to create a world where everyone can live, love, worship and work free from bigotry and fear
About us
Based in the Pacific Northwest and Mountain States, we work nationwide to strengthen inclusive democracy. There are four pillars of our work: Building Movement We strengthen the organizing capacity of often-marginalized communities, with a particular emphasis on gender justice, racial justice, and tribal sovereignty work. Developing Leaders We provide training, leadership development, and organizational capacity support to social movements and leaders committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Shifting Culture We convene culture-makers to shift the narrative and use culture as a vehicle for base-and power-building in non-traditional social change spaces. Defending Democracy We assist communities and civil society to uphold the rule of law by effectively responding to social movements that exploit bigotry and intolerance.

United Sovereign Americans, an election denialist group, had an audience with the Clackamas County Commission last week. Lindsay Schubiner, Director of Programs at Western States Center, told the Oregonian that the group “makes it clear they’re organizing to disrupt free and fair elections through lawsuits. These activities cast doubt on legitimate election results, mainstreaming anti-democracy ideas and pushing the United States toward authoritarianism.” That said, we're pleased so many Clackamas County leaders have signed onto our nonpartisan Letter from Elected and Community Leaders Denouncing Political Violence, including legislators and the Milwaukie and Wilsonville mayors. 🗳️ #ProtectOurElections #DefendDemocracy #Election2024 https://lnkd.in/emNmYU9h Navigating the 2024 Election in Schools: https://lnkd.in/ej3_8j7M Safeguarding Democracy During the 2024 Election- A Community Action Guide: https://lnkd.in/eq8aQEpT

[Shared from Bend the Arc: Jewish Action and HIAS] Six years ago today, 11 people were murdered in Pittsburgh — the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the history of the U.S. The attack was inspired by the "Great Replacement Theory," the antisemitic conspiracy theory that falsely claims Jews are orchestrating the deliberate replacement of white Americans with non-white immigrants and people of color. Today, the "Great Replacement Theory" is still being shared from some of the largest political stages in the country to blame and scapegoat both Jews and immigrants in advance of the election. We were targeted for what we believe in and work for: connection, togetherness, and solidarity. And we know that these are the values that will keep all of us — Jews and non-Jews — safe in our shared future. When they threaten any of us, they threaten all of us. May the lives of those lost be for the brightest blessing ❤️🩹 https://lnkd.in/eV9FwuCP
