ON THE MOVE: Westinghouse Electric Company is developing this transportable microreactor. eVinci will use advanced heat pipe technology and TRISO fuel to help expand access to clean energy to communities across the world. Westinghouse is one of three companies selected to potentially test its microreactor design at our DOME testbed at Idaho National Laboratory. The front-end engineering and experiment design process supports developers in planning for the design, fabrication, construction, and testing of fueled reactor experiments. Testing in DOME could start as early as 2026 and is being led by our National Reactor Innovation Center Learn more: https://bit.ly/48zw3h5

The two new advanced AP1000® PWR reactors at Plant Vogtle were named “Power Plant of the Year” by POWER magazine, well-deserved recognition for Southern Nuclear, Georgia Power Company and the tremendous effort by thousands of professionals who contributed to the project. Vogtle Units 3 and 4 both came online in the last 12 months. The magazine highlighted the reactors’ awesome performance so far. “Vogtle Unit 3’s initial performance has exceeded our expectations,” John Williams, Southern Nuclear senior vice president for Vogtle 3 and 4, told POWER. “Since it began commercial operation in July 2023, Unit 3 has operated at greater than 98% capacity factor, running at 100% since commercial operation was declared with the exception of a planned five-day maintenance outage.” That exceeds the #NuclearEnergy industry average of 93% capacity! Combined, the two AP1000 reactors are churning out enough clean energy to power 1 million homes. In an industry-first for #NuclearEnergy, we have used additive manufacturing (AM) to fabricate bottom nozzles that improve debris capture and fuel endurance within our fuel assemblies. The nozzles were used in four Lead Test Assemblies delivered to Alabama Power’s Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, which is operated by Southern Nuclear. • Bringing two new advanced Westinghouse AP1000® reactors online in Georgia in the last 12 months capped years of hard work by thousands of world-class professionals. Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4 are the first new reactors in the United States in 30 years. Hear from some of our employees as they reflect on the incredible effort in collaboration with Georgia Power, Southern Nuclear, Bechtel and many other partners and suppliers.

  • A big challenge for #NuclearEnergy power plants is identifying and replacing obsolete parts. We're here to help! Gathering experience from our work at more than 200 nuclear facilities across the world, the Westinghouse Proactive Obsolescence Management System (POMS) aggregates information from all types of nuclear power plants (PWR, BWR, CANDU, AGR, VVER). • We’re open for business and hiring now at our new global engineering hub in Kitchener, Ontario! The opening of the new 13,000-square-foot facility comes at an exciting time for the Canadian nuclear energy industry. There is growing interest in building new reactors big and small like Westinghouse’s advanced AP1000® reactor, the AP300™ small modular reactor and the eVinci ™ microreactor: to power cities and towns in southern regions, and to replace fossil fuels for remote communities and industries in the north of the country. Read about why we chose the Kitchener-Waterloo region, an area of Canada known as “Silicon Valley of the North” for its vibrant tech sector, and the jobs we are filling at the engineering site in the year ahead: https://lnkd.in/gFqAUC5G

  • We signed an agreement today with Saskatchewan Power Corporation and Cameco Corporation to evaluate the potential for our nuclear reactor technology and nuclear fuel supply chain to help meet Saskatchewan’s future clean power needs. This new memorandum of understanding (MOU) will explore pathways to deploy Westinghouse’s reactor technology, including the advanced AP1000® reactor and AP300™ small modular reactor, for long-term electricity supply planning. We are excited about our continuing expansion in Canada. Last week, we opened a new global engineering hub in Kitchener, Ontario, dedicated to supporting the CANDU® operating fleet and deployment of Westinghouse new-build technologies – including the AP1000 reactor, AP300 #SMR and eVinci™ microreactor.
