Weston & Sampson completed the design and construction of a gravity thickener mechanism and cover replacement at the Woonsocket, RI Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF). The gravity thickener processes waste activated sludge from the facility, along with centrate from the adjacent biosolids handling facility. In 2023, the existing thickener cover and mechanism failed, prompting the need for an expedited replacement. Working closely with the city, Weston & Sampson coordinated the pre-purchase of the new mechanism and designed the system concurrently with its fabrication—allowing the equipment to arrive a month ahead of construction, which began in April 2024. By August 2024, the new mechanism and cover system were fully installed and tested, and as of early September, have been successfully thickening sludge. The upgraded system includes: ✔️ A scum collection system ✔️ Larger odor control suction pipe ✔️ Epoxy coating ✔️ Spray nozzles for floating solids Our team provided construction engineering and field inspection services throughout the process. Despite unforeseen challenges, Weston & Sampson and Hart Corporation completed the project on time and with enhanced system functionality. #MunicipalEngineering #WastewaterTreatment #GravityThickener #InfrastructureUpgrades #WoonsocketRI #PublicWorks

✨ Co-Op Spotlight: Sarah Long Meet Sarah, a civil engineering student at University of Massachusetts Amherst, who gained hands-on experience in wastewater engineering during her co-op with Weston & Sampson. She had the opportunity to work in the field, apply her technical knowledge, and collaborate with industry professionals. Here’s what she had to say about her experience: "As an Engineering Assistant at Weston & Sampson in the wastewater division, I learned so much about the process of maintaining functional sewer and drain systems. This includes the prevention of having these two systems mix, so that clean groundwater is not entering the sewers and overwhelming wastewater treatment plants. I gained an immense amount of knowledge in this discipline through fieldwork, especially where I conducted manhole and drain inspections, used Global Positioning System (GPS) to map wastewater and stormwater structures, and inspected buildings to identify possible inflow sources. I am grateful to have had this amazing opportunity and to have worked alongside fantastic engineers." 🔎 Interested in gaining real-world engineering experience? Berkeley County Water & Sanitation (BCWS) has successfully completed the final construction phase of its Pump Station 1 Force Main Replacement project in Goose Creek, SC. This phase connected two previously installed force main sections along Red Bank Road by replacing over 6,000 linear feet of aging 30-inch ductile iron pipe with a new 42-inch PVC sewer main. The project employed a mix of traditional cut-and-cover, remove-and-replace techniques, and three jack-and-bore installations—one of which used laser-guided precision beneath railroad tracks. The new force main now carries flows from PS001 and/or PS002 directly to the Lower Berkeley treatment facility. Its increased capacity enables BCWS to meet the community’s growing collection needs. Weston & Sampson was happy to work on this project in collaboration with BCWS by providing design, bidding, and construction-phase services.

Weston & Sampson led a team helping Hartford envision the future of its South Meadows. We recently completed a comprehensive multidisciplinary effort to evaluate the environmental condition of the site and structures of Hartford’s 80-acre former waste-to-energy site along the Connecticut River—laying the groundwork for future mixed-use redevelopment. Our team evaluated environmental conditions, flood protection systems, and potential redevelopment scenarios—such as residential, mixed-use, or commercial and prepared cost estimates for several remediation and infrastructure deployment scenarios. Our team also facilitated significant community outreach, including stakeholder interviews, surveys, and public meetings, to ensure local voices helped shape the vision. This study offers Hartford an important starting point for site development to transform an underutilized site into a vibrant and connected neighborhood. 📖 Read more in the Hartford Business Journal: https://lnkd.in/eAwa5eBz #UrbanPlanning #CommunityEngagement #HartfordCT #SustainableDevelopment #TransformYourEnvironment
