Wether it’s ECMO, CPB or bedside management, knowing your data, your equipment and where you stand on the bell curve is critically important in advancing patient care and personal growth.
President at Westward Medical. Experienced Perfusionist at Pulse Heart Institute (Tacoma General Hospital) with a strong background in patient care, administrative work, clinical sales and education.
Keeping up on your skills and education as a clinician is arguably the most important thing you can do for yourself and your patients. The importance of the equipment you choose and the parameters you monitor should not be overlooked though. I feel incredibly fortunate to belong to an institution that has supported our equipment requests and research projects. The tools you decide to use and the data you decide to collect can significantly improve your ability to do your job. It can make life in the OR a lot easier all while making sure your team is doing the most it can to improve the patient’s quality of life. Collecting data and understanding how it relates to the larger patient population across multiple centers should, in my opinion be something we all strive to do. I could give many examples of how our teams practice has changed since monitoring DO2 or submitting patient parameters to a national registry. I could talk about switching our CPG protocols and our reduction of post clamp hyperkalemia or the importance of taking a multidisciplinary approach to fluid balance resulting in reduced transfusion rates and vent times but instead I just want to hit on the importance of knowing your tools and your data. Knowing where you stand on the bell curve and understanding why you’re there. We all want the best outcomes possible for our patients and we understand that there are many factors out of our control as perfusionists. We are advocates though and strong ones at that. What we decide to use and the data we collect not only leads to a higher degree of safety and better outcomes but it can also save our institutions financially. I would encourage you all to continue to be the best advocates possible, understand your data and make a push for whatever equipment/tools you believe will result in better patient care and institutional savings. We are all playing on the same team with the same goal. Let’s use eachother to make ourselves better.
