The White & Case Washington DC office recently hosted a panel discussion and networking event titled "The Nuclear New Wave: Structuring and Financing Small Modular Reactor Projects." The event featured a keynote address by Ximena Vásquez-Maignan, counsel and leader of our global Nuclear Energy group, who highlighted the potential of nuclear power to decarbonize the industrial sector and provide a reliable source of electricity and heat at the required level, particularly for energy intensive industries.
Our first panel, moderated by Peter Berg, a projects partner in our Houston office, included industry leaders from Last Energy (Ryan Duncan) and Core Power (Scott Edwards), who shared their insights on small modular reactors (SMR) innovations and structural complexities of two different technologies: on-land SMRs and nuclear for maritime applications (floating nuclear power plants and nuclear ships). Martin Menski, head of our Projects Agency Finance practice based in DC, led a discussion on the key challenges for financing in the US and globally and the types of financial instruments and insurance products available, with panelists from the US Department of Energy (Julie Kozeracki), US Export-Import Bank (Ashok Pasricha), and Marsh Global Specialty Energy & Power (Jim Palaia).
This event underscores White & Case’s commitment to supporting cutting-edge technologies and leading the conversation on project development and financing in the energy and infrastructure space. A big thank you to our expert panels and attendees for making the event a huge success!
