About us

White Pine Center for Healing is the only center located in the Tristate area that supports individuals experiencing or recovering from eating disorders, body image issues, weight stigma, and trauma. We promote healing, recovery, and prevention and guide individuals through their recovery journey. Our evidence-based treatments offer a holistic approach to individual growth and personal healing in a secure and comfortable environment. Individuals that come to us learn to build a healthy relationship with food, mind, and body, heal emotionally, and address body image and self-esteem. We are passionate about our educational outreach programs for families, schools, businesses, and the community to spread awareness about eating disorders. Our outreach programs provide them with the tools to help prevent an eating disorder before it begins by understanding how their words and actions can have a long-lasting effect on those they interact with regularly. Our healing center provides appropriate prevention and treatment options for you or your loved ones. Services include classes, support groups, individual therapy, clinical assessments, referrals, and evidence-based programs like Intuitive Eating, Heartmath Biofeedback, The Body Project, Confident Body Confident Child, and Love Your Tree.

  • We are thrilled to announce that we are partnering with the Mercy Center For Women and are in the process of moving to the Mercy Anchor Community Center! This partnership will allow us to continue to expand and provide our services and resources to even more people in our community. Because White Pine Center for Healing is the only center located in the tri-state area that specializes in supporting individuals with eating disorders, body image issues, and trauma, we have a very high demand for our clinical services. To better serve those who need these services, we are working on providing clinical resources on our website including reliable clinicians to guide individuals to the appropriate resources.   • September is Suicide Prevention Month ❤️ As we all know, adolescence comes with a lot of emotional, physical, and social changes. These changes, coupled with messages from the media and interactions with other youth, or bullying, can lead to a poor body image, among other mental health issues. Body dissatisfaction can cause youth to not care for their bodies, increasing the likelihood of viewing the body as an object that is separate from them, making it easier to harm. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-14, the 3rd leading cause of death among those aged 15-24 and the 12th leading cause of death overall in the U.S. Education and awareness are key to making a change!   • Diet culture is a set of beliefs that is rooted in the idea that our worth is based on our appearance. It prioritizes thinness over health and encourages weight loss as a way to reach a higher social status. Diet culture significantly influences the way we think about ourselves and others. Here are some examples of how diet culture impacts our mental health: 🧠 It promotes an unrealistic beauty standard, that is often unattainable for many body types. Not reaching this beauty standard causes people to have a negative body image and self-esteem issues, which can lead to risky behaviors. 🧠 Trying to achieve the “ideal” body, people often develop an unhealthy obsession with food and exercise. When they don’t reach the beauty standard, they can feel like they failed, causing guilt and shame. 🧠 These feelings can lead to disordered eating behaviors, like restricting, binge eating, or purging, which can lead to full-blown eating disorders. It doesn’t have to be this way. You can help us help youth break free from diet culture ideals by supporting our prevention programming.   • Did you know past studies have shown that people in larger bodies often experience shorter appointments, less comprehensive exams, fewer referrals for specialists and imaging, and longer wait times for surgeries and other procedures than those in smaller bodies? This is because of weight bias: negative attitudes, beliefs, judgements, stereotypes, and discriminatory acts aimed at individuals because of their weight (Obesity Action Coalition). When people in larger bodies repeatedly experience judgment, bias, and stigmatizing language from medical professionals, they avoid seeking health care altogether for both minimal and significant medical concerns. “When you start from a place of thinking someone who’s fat is unhealthy, and not deserving of support or empathy, that will inform their care at every level” (Aubrey Gordon). Weight bias can be found anywhere, and the best way to make a change is by raising awareness.   • As students are beginning to settle into the new school year, kids may begin to experience pressure to look a certain way, especially with the influence of social media 🙅 Body satisfaction is so important for all kids to experience because it helps them to feel good about themselves, boosts mental health, reduces the chances of engaging in risky behaviors, and can even help them improve academic performance and social relationships 💞 To help kids foster a good body image, here are some tips you can practice: ✏️ Set screen time boundaries together: work with your child to set reasonable time limits and encourage doing other activities together. ✏️ Follow positive content: go through your social media feeds together and follow accounts that celebrate diversity, kindness, and authenticity. Remove any accounts that don’t! ✏️ Practice self-expression activities: engage in creative activities that encourage them to express their individuality and feel good about themselves. ✏️ Be a role model: practice demonstrating self-love and appreciating your own body to show your child the importance of valuing themselves just as they are. An example of this would be focusing on the things your body can do, rather than what it looks like. ✏️ Practice mindfulness: practice mindfulness together to promote self-awareness, challenge negative thoughts, and encourage self-compassion. Some examples to practice are mindful breathing, gratitude journaling, mindful movement, or positive affirmations.
