WED office staff recently completed an analysis of our restoration project site on Sipson Island, Orleans. The boat ride and a day in the sun were certainly a plus! #ecologicalrestoration #capecod #ecology #nativeplants

Our mission is to restore the integrity and biodiversity of the unique natural ecosystems throughout New England.
About us
Wilkinson Ecological Design’s mission is to protect and restore the integrity and biodiversity of the unique natural ecosystems of Cape Cod, the Islands, and Eastern Massachusetts. We focus on using safe and effective invasive plant management techniques for the restoration and establishment of native plant communities. Since the founding of Wilkinson Ecological Design, Inc. (WED) in 1999, over 100 acres of warm season grassland plant communities have been restored on Cape Cod alone. Numerous coastal bank restoration projects have been successfully completed as well as a number of wetland and large-scale habitat restoration projects. WED has also permitted and implemented some of the largest scale innovative bioengineering projects for coastal stabilization on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. By restoring coastal plant communities in conjunction with the use of appropriate bioengineering products, both stability of coastal landforms and integrity of wildlife habitat have been successfully re-established. Wilkinson Ecological Design, Inc. continues to push the envelope for the development of innovative techniques to restore and stabilize native plant communities while balancing client needs within a regulatory framework. WED employs a staff of highly trained individuals with unique skill sets, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and innovation. We embrace the ever-changing nature of natural systems and work to provide the integrity for these systems to adapt to fluctuating environmental conditions.

Blue vervain (𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘢 𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢) is the star of the show in this vegetated buffer! This native perennial wildflower thrives in wet areas, attracts pollinators, and is a source of food for songbirds. #ecologicalrestoration #nativeplantsofmassachusetts #bluevervain #capecod

Phragmites (𝘗𝘩𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴), known as the common reed, is an invasive plant species in Massachusetts. It invades wetlands, creating a monoculture. Removing phragmites allows the native plant community to restore itself over time. #phragmites #invasivespecies #capecod #ecologicalrestoration

Yesterday, July 28th, was World Nature Conservation Day! Wetlands are a crucial component of nature, providing our ecosystems with many services like flood control and carbon sequestration. Wetlands also promote biodiversity, trap sediment and filter pollutants. Cape Cod’s wetlands are protected under the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, which allows us here at WED to protect our wetlands for future generations to enjoy! #capecodwetlands #biodiversity #ecologicaldesign #worldnatureconservationday

The butterfly weed (𝘈𝘴𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘢) in WED’s nursery has been teeming with an abundance of insect species ever since the flowers began to bloom. Each photo captures a distinct insect species, some of which utilize the flowers for pollen, while others (namely the Thick-Headed Fly) might be there to hunt an unsuspecting bee. The wide variety of insect life observed on this one cluster of milkweed plants emphasizes just how vital this native plant species is for the ecosystem. We were unable to identify all of the insects down to the species, so if you are an expert or enthusiast, we encourage you to comment your opinion on each species! #butterflyweed #capecod #ecologicalrestoration #nativeplants
