Willig, Williams & Davidson partner Joseph Richardson recently discussed his career as a labor lawyer on a podcast titled I Am the Law, presented by LawHub. Joe traced his career path from his early years in military service to his current work representing union clients. Looking for work that felt meaningful and positive, he found inspiration when taking a class in law school that reminded him of his upbringing. Unions make our country strong by protecting our workers and ensuring they are compensated fairly, and work in safe conditions. In 2024, the National Labor Relations Board reported an increase in union petitions by 35%, with recent victories for workers in such industries as travel, retail, journalism, and agriculture. We are excited by this progress but our work is not done. We continue to stand with working people who are mobilizing for a better life and the unions organizing on their behalf. This Labor Day, we salute all workers and thank them for being the backbone of our communities. #LaborDay #WorkersRights #WorkersInspireUs #UnionStrong

In the early 1900s, a census revealed that approximately 2 million American children were working in mills, mines, fields, factories, and other harsh environments, sparking a movement to end child labor. Today marks the anniversary of the Keating–Owen Child Labor Act of 1916 being signed into law. Its passage signified a national commitment to fight the exploitation of children. Children deserve a childhood. We are grateful for the efforts of the advocates who came before us. #ChildLabor #WorkersRights #FairLaborPractices

When an employee is injured at work and the employer is properly notified of the injury, the employer can issue a Notice of Temporary Compensation Payable (NTCP). Under an NTCP, an employer initiates compensation payments without admitting liability while they investigate the claim over a 90-day period. In our latest blog, workers’ compensation attorney Maria Elena Dryden, Esq. outlines what employees need to know about NTCPs and their implications for future benefits. #WorkersCompensation #WorkInjury #EmployeeBenefits

This federal anti-discrimination law applies to all public sector employers and private sector employers with at least 15 employees. Workers may submit charges of discrimination under the PWFA to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the agency responsible for implementing and enforcing the law. At the end of July, the National Labor Relations Board adopted a Final Rule called the Fair Choice-Employee Voice Rule to overturn three Trump-era policies that had encouraged employer interference and delay in employee organizing and destabilized bargaining relationships in the construction industry. In their place, the new Rule has restored longstanding policies designed to protect employee choice of representatives. In our latest blog, labor lawyer Micky Devitt examines the implications of these policies for workers and unions. #NLRB #LaborLaw #ProtectEmployees
