What to do if your family member is detained by ice Having a family member be detained by ICE can feel like a hopeless situation. Oftentimes you will not know where or how long they have been detained and they can possibly be moved from State to State with little warning. Here are three things you can do that will help you and your family throughout this challenging experience. 1. Be organized - To determine what forms of relief your family member may be entitled to will require careful analysis of many different types of documents. It is important to keep any old court records, prior forms sent to immigration and hard-to-place documents such as birth certificates or passports in a safe and organized manner. This will allow an attorney to be able to analyze the case in a more efficient manner and help come up with a solution for your family member. 2. Be patient - Any process that will help your family member will take time. Whether is requesting a bond hearing or preparing a request for voluntary departure, these processes will have to run their course. Certain types of parole require ICE to analyze a case to see if they are eligible for release, and every officer and detention center is different. Understanding this will help alleviate some of the pain and stress during the process. 3. Be cooperative - Anyone on the outside will serve as their family’s lifeline while they are detained. For asylum cases that might require you to contact family members in a different country trying to get copies of important evidence. For cases such as cancellation of removal, you might be required to collect years-worth of old documents to show that your family member has been here for ten years. No matter the case you will serve a crucial role while working with an attorney and their team. When a loved one is detained, it is crucial that they begin working immediately with a qualified attorney to see what options are available to them. The skilled attorneys at Wilner & O’Reilly have helped countless families navigate this process. Contact us today:

In 2019, Michael Wang, the managing attorney of the Sacramento office at Wilner & O'Reilly, was invited to deliver a community lecture in San Jose on one of the most pressing issues of the time: immigration policies and the changes that had taken place under the Trump administration. His insights, based on years of experience in immigration law, were invaluable to the community, providing clarity in a time of significant uncertainty. Following his impactful lecture, the local paper featured a detailed write-up of the event, highlighting the importance of educating the public on these evolving issues. Michael's expertise and dedication to community outreach were further recognized when he received a Certificate of Appreciation, a testament to the value he brought to the event and the lives of those in attendance. As we approach another election cycle, immigration policy is once again at the forefront of national conversation. With the potential for new changes on the horizon, Wilner & O'Reilly remains dedicated to providing clients with the most up-to-date knowledge about immigration law. Our commitment to staying informed and helping you navigate these shifts ensures that, no matter what policies are introduced, you will have the expert guidance needed to move forward confidently. #ImmigrationLaw #LegalExpertise #PolicyChanges #Election2024 #WilnerOReilly
