Honoring servicewomen, preserving their stories and inspiring future generations.
About us
The Military Women's Memorial, located at the Ceremonial Entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, is a living memorial. We are dedicated to honoring and remembering the service of our military women, telling their individual stories and collective history to the public, in order to help empower the future generations. Dedicated on Oct. 18, 1997, the Memorial houses an exhibit gallery chronicling the history of women’s service, a theater, Hall of Honor, conference room, gift shop and an outdoor terrace and Court of Valor. The heart of the Memorial is the Register, an interactive database that includes the name, picture, service history and awards of nearly 245,000 past and present servicewomen.

Yesterday afternoon, the fountain and reflecting pool on the Military Women's Memorial plaza, which represent the individual and collective voices of women, were filled with water and turned on! Beautiful! After a year of much-needed renovations, we are so excited that the fountain and reflecting pool are in service and we can welcome everyone back to the Memorial plaza - the Court of Valor - to reflect on, honor, and remember women who served and are serving our nation. What a special gift in celebration of 27 years and as Veterans Day approaches! We hope you will visit and pay tribute to the women who have so courageously served in our nation's defense. Learn More about the Memorial - https://lnkd.in/eyef2Wk5 Our gratitude to all who made this renovation possible. Congratulations to Capt. Stephanie Simon, USMC, on winning her professional boxing debut! https://bit.ly/3Ao3DLw "Simon credits her boxing evolution to the grit she developed in the Corps, and in leading units that weren’t used to having a woman in charge." "As she embarks on a new phase of her career, Simon said she is proud to represent the Corps in the boxing ring. 'I’m excited to share my story and really bring this element of leadership into the boxing community,” she said. “I believe that we are in need of it, and I want to be a good example for people all over the world.'” #USMC #militarywoman #militarystrong

A Halloween contest, an unexpected prize, a chef, a pardon, and a sprint across a parade field! We hope you enjoy today's story of service from the MWM National Register. The stories of service and memorable experiences shared by women in our National Register range from stories of war, sacrifice, hardship, heroism, achievements, promotions, duty stations, perseverance, responsibilities, to the lighter side - helping local children, the beauty of the countryside in an unfamiliar place, assimilating to local life in overseas duty stations, the friendships built through service, parades, celebrating the holidays away from home, and even a little mischief. Every single story is an important and meaningful depiction of life in service to our nation, from the rigors of service and the many positions, ranks, and achievements to the activities that allowed for normalcy, fun, stress relief, friendships like no other, life! Every story on its own is important, interesting, and compelling, but only when these stories are preserved and nestled together do they provide a true picture, both in breadth and depth, of the service of women and their journey - this fabric so gently and intricately woven together over hundreds of years yet indestructible, strong, POWERFUL! These stories, individual and collective, are our past, our present, and the foundation for our future. #HerMemorial #WeAreMWM #HonorEducateEmpowerRemember *Notes in the MWM Register reveal the final fate of the duck. The story continues as such - "The Colonel found out all about it from some place and so did the Des Moines newspaper. I guess we caused quite a stir. At inspection the next day, the Colonel thanked me and said they would have duck dinner on Thanksgiving. About a year later I returned to Fort Des Moines for overseas training. The Colonel remembered me, even by name. He told me they didn't have the heart to kill the duck either and that it was alive and happy on a ranch they owned outside of Des Moines. I didn't think this was very funny when it happened. As a matter of act, I was scared but now I laugh every time I think of it."
