🌊🐢 Exciting advancements in tracking juvenile sea turtles using #Argos data! Understanding the life of hatchlings after they leave the nesting beach has long been a mystery, often referred to as the "lost years." The Lost Years Initiative, led by #Upwell, aims to change that by using micro-satellite tags (in partnership with Lotek Wireless, Inc.) that weigh just 100 grams. These tags allow researchers to follow these vulnerable creatures out to sea. With unique features like a whip antenna and a saltwater switch, these tags optimize satellite transmission, crucial for monitoring the turtles' movements and habitat use. To maximize efficiency, Upwell researchers estimated satellite coverage hours from #Argos data and tailored the transmission schedule accordingly. This optimization enables the use of smaller batteries—typically the heaviest part of satellite transmitters—allowing for even lighter and more effective tags. Moreover, the upcoming launch of 25 nanosatellites by Kinéis will enhance Argos services, improving data efficiency and location accuracy. This is a game changer for Upwell's biologging efforts, enabling better insights into the lives of juvenile sea turtles. 🌍💚 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eAz4k6Te #MarineConservation #SeaTurtles #WildlifeResearch #Innovation #Kineis #Argos

🌊 **Benthic Survey at Vineyard Wind - 1 Year Post-Construction!** 🌬️ Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to be on Northstar Marine Inc's Atlantic Surveyor, as part of a benthic survey for Vineyard Wind and Geo SubSea LLC. We were assessing the impacts on the seafloor ecosystem one year after construction of VW 01. Leading the night shift with Lindsay Pisapio, EIT and Alex Carbone, we got to see firsthand how the wind farm interacts with its underwater environment, collecting crucial data to support long-term sustainability and compliance with BOEM permits. From sediment sampling to monitoring benthic species like sand lance, it was a rewarding experience contributing to this pioneer offshore wind project. It’s exciting to witness how renewable energy and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand! ⚡🔬 Thank you to the amazing crew at Northstar Marine Inc, Geo SubSea LLC, and Woods Hole Group, Inc. for all their support along the way! #RenewableEnergy #OffshoreWind #Sustainability #MarineScience #BenthicSurvey #VineyardWind #NightShiftScience #CleanEnergy

♨️ At Woods Hole Group we have a team of meteorologists and oceanographers. Today, we are giving an update on #HurricaneMilton. 🌀 Hurricanes thrive off warm ocean water. With #ClimateChange, sea surface temperatures and ocean heat content are increasing. Think of ocean heat content as the amount of thermal energy in the ocean from the surface to the ocean floor (fuel for hurricanes)/ 🔥 We receive the ocean heat content product courtesy of Dr. Nick Shay team at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Sciences. This video showcases our exclusive loop current model: WHG-TOPS. TOPS stands for Tendral Ocean Prediction System.   Learn more about our Energy and Infrastructure team and Environment and Climate team by clicking here: https://lnkd.in/ez_g6MXN

♨️ The exchange of heat, moisture, and momentum between the ocean's surface and the atmosphere is essential in the formation and intensification of tropical cyclones and hurricanes. Warm ocean waters provide the energy needed for these storms to form and intensify, while atmospheric circulation patterns guide their movement and development. 🔄 New for our EddyWatch® – Northern Gulf of Mexico clients this year is the Ocean Heat Content (OHC) product developed by the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science. OHC is a parameter that estimates the amount of thermal energy in the upper ocean (relative to the 26°C isotherm) available for tropical cyclogenesis. 🔗 More on our energy and infrastructure team: https://lnkd.in/eJBm8ghE 🔗 More on the Upper Ocean Dynamics Laboratory: https://lnkd.in/e9aRhf57 #HurricaneHelene #OceanHeatContent #ClimateChange
