Being a pharmacist on Vashon Island puts Tyler Young (’13 PharmD) on the front lines of health care. With the nearest hospitals a ferry-ride away, the community relies on a small group of providers for a bulk of their health care needs. To help islanders stay healthy, Young has been working to expand primary care services in his pharmacy.

GLP-1 is a natural hormone made in the gut that’s released after we eat. Prescription versions mimic the rise in this hormone which slows digestion and prompts people to stop eating, leading to weight loss. With a rising interest in prescription GLP-1 medications, an interest has also risen in non-medication ways to boost the hormone. Earlier this year, WebMD talked to Professor Megan Undeberg about some of the facts and myths surrounding what boosts GLP-1.

✨ Get to know the WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences! ✨ This week we are excited to spotlight WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the remarkable impact they’re making in health care! The College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences is based here in Spokane with a Doctor of Pharmacy extension in Yakima. The college offers programs designed to train the next generation of pharmacists, researchers, and leaders in health care. 🌟 Fun fact: The WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has been at the forefront of pharmacy education since 1891 (that is over 133 years!). Pharmacy was one of the first of four areas of study approved by the WSU regents—which just so happens to make it the oldest area of study on our Spokane campus.🐾 Whether developing new treatments in the lab or improving patient care in the community, the impact of WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences graduates is felt worldwide. 🌎There is a reason why it is ranked top tier of all public and private pharmacy schools for research funding by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). We’re so proud of how the College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences is making an impact every day. ❤️ Here is to all the Coug pharmacists, alums, students, and faculty who are actively bettering and shaping the world of health care and pharmacy every day. #WSUSpokane #WSUPharmacy #HealthCareEducation #PharmacistsMonth

When Joshua Neumiller was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes shortly after graduating pharmacy school he was inspired to help others learn how to live with their diabetes and self-manage treatments. His dedication to diabetes education and research has led to his current role as President-Elect of Health Care & Education for the 2024 American Diabetes Association (ADA) Board of Directors as well as his more recent selection as the ADA’s 2024 Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Awardee. This summer, Healio caught up with the Allen I. White Distinguished Professor to ask about his research, mentors, and interests outside of diabetes care.

Using computer-aided drug design, researchers in the Modeling & Simulation Lab led by Senthil Natesan are working to find ways to reduce the time and cost to develop new drugs. The approach allows scientists to use computer simulations to predict how a drug will interact with different proteins and how safe, effective, and selective that drug will be.

Multiple medications are often necessary for older patients, with many adults 65 and older taking four or more prescription drugs. But, the more medications a person requires, the more chances of problems, or even hospitalization. Pharmacists, and particularly those who specialize in senior care, can help. The in-depth knowledge of medications and the effects on the body that comes with a pharmacist's training, leaves them ideally suited to identify, prevent, and resolve medication-related problems during transitions of care.
