Breaking new grounds in brain-computer interface technology! RNI researchers, in partnership with Precision Neuroscience, have achieved a breakthrough, revealing neural activity related to speech. WVU medical student Kate Gelman represented Dr. Peter Konrad and the RNI team in presenting the findings during the 2024 Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) in Houston. For the first time, WVU RNI researchers have successfully monitored neural activity related to speech in real time, decoding the intent to speak with 80-90% accuracy before the words are even spoken. This significant advancement paves the way for innovations in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology, offering new possibilities for clinical applications and improved communication for patients with speech-affecting neurological conditions.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is often misdiagnosed because its symptoms, like personality changes and memory loss, can mimic other conditions such as Alzheimer's, depression, or even psychiatric disorders. Early and accurate diagnosis is key to providing proper care and support for patients and their families. #FTDAwarenessWeek
