The Extended Reality (XR) industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, with projections estimating a market size of $1.7 trillion by 2032, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 32.1% from 2023 to 2032 (Fortune Business Insights). As developers create applications poised to dominate future computing landscapes, the importance of ethical considerations has never been more critical. Recent developments underscore these concerns. For instance, two Harvard students modified Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses to reveal personal information about individuals merely by looking at them, highlighting significant privacy risks (Ars Technica). Additionally, the IEEE has published white papers addressing the erosion of anonymity and privacy in XR, emphasizing the need for ethical frameworks in this rapidly evolving field (IEEE Xplore). In light of these developments, the XR Guild, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the just and ethical use of XR technology, is proud to support Stanford’s Immerse the Bay Hackathon, taking place this Friday, November 8, to Sunday, November 10, 2024. This event brings together a diverse cohort of participants to develop ethical XR products, fostering innovation grounded in responsibility. We are honored to join esteemed sponsors, including Amazon, Gabb, Immersal, Mark 3, Membit, Meta, Niantic, NVIDIA, ShapesXR, and Snap, in making XR a reality. Together, we aim to ensure that as the XR industry expands, it does so with a steadfast commitment to ethical principles, safeguarding user privacy and promoting inclusivity. Join us in supporting the next generation of developers as they build the future of XR with integrity and responsibility. Privacy matters!
I'm happy to announce my first computer science publication & ISMAR conference paper! Our work, "Visceral Interfaces for Privacy Awareness of Eye Tracking in VR," evaluated the opportunity to increase privacy awareness and influence data sharing attitudes for #XR eye-tracking data. By leveraging visceral notice, we gave users a sense of what collected eye-tracking data looks like situated within the VR experience to inform #consent for data collection and #privacy attitudes. Huge congrats to Brendan David-John (Virginia Tech) and his Ph.D. student Gabriella "Nikki" Ramirez-Saffy for leading the effort, and our multi-discplinary team of Evan Sellinger, Shaun Foster, Pratheep Kumar Chelladurai, Alances Vargas (RIT), and Syed Ibrahim Mustafa Shah B. (VT). More information about the project and the pdf are available on the Virginia Tech lab website:
