We are thrilled to announce a $1.8 million investment secured by Congressman Zach Nunn for the Walnut Creek YMCA. On Monday, Rep. Nunn joined us to announce the federal investment, which will improve the health and wellness of our community, enhance the safety of our facility, and significantly elevate our services to children, families, and seniors throughout Des Moines. Rep. Nunn secured $1,808,000 through the community project funding process, which allows members to designate funding for critical initiatives. This investment will fund essential renovations to the entrance and main lobby, relocate the front offices to develop a multipurpose space, and expand the YMCA’s youth development programming. As a result, we look forward to strengthening our ability to provide a place of belonging for all in our community. We are immensely grateful for Rep. Nunn’s leadership and advocacy in securing federal funding for these vital renovations!

Last week, we attended the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines Annual Luncheon to celebrate connection, collaboration, and community. One initiative highlighted at this year's event involves the partnership between the YMCA of Greater Des Moines and the Five Fires Foundation. Through a Strategic Alignment Grant provided by the Community Foundation, we were able to work together to invest in the future of Y Camp for generations to come. We are so grateful to the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines for their generous support of Y Camp in Boone! After all, we are simply #bettertogether. Today, Y staff and volunteers enjoyed attending United Way of Central Iowa's LIVE UNITED luncheon. It was a great opportunity to gather and discuss critical community challenges with Des Moines leaders and organizations. Together, we can work to ensure our community and every individual within thrives!

This week we gathered with members of our board, volunteer campaigners, and staff to celebrate the impact of our 2024 Annual Campaign. Currently, we’ve raised 91% of our campaign goal and could not have done it without the generosity and support of many!    These individuals were recognized for their outstanding efforts: • Cynthia Thorland, Board of Directors for campaigning from all over the globe while traveling as far as Norway and Antarctica • James West, Waukee YMCA for raising the most funds as a new campaigner • Jeff Cose, YMCA Supportive Housing Campus for being the campaigner with the highest number of donors   Additionally, we recognized the Lift Every Voice in Love benefit concert committee members for their work in organizing a fantastic musical collaboration in support of Grubb YMCA youth: Ben Allaway, Pastor Ryan Arnold, Bobbretta Brewton, Robin Jenkins, and Pastor Jonathan Whitfield. We are honored to be the recipients of their generosity.   Due to the work of these individuals and many others, our Annual Campaign will benefit more than 18,000 individuals in our community and ensure no one is turned away based on their ability to pay for services.
