Center-of-the-market investing may sound vanilla. Boring even. But … … how much drama do you want at the core of your portfolio? Our founder, David D. Basten, has refined an investment approach that features a limited number of securities from a broad cross-section of: 👉 capitalizations 👉 styles 👉 geographies And our disciplined portfolio management process helps ensure rallying positions don’t wreck our broadly diversified focus. We call it center-of-the-market investing. And we believe it’s worth exploring as a core portfolio holding. Discover more at our upcoming webinar. 🗓️ When? October 10th at 11 a.m. ET 🔗 How? Have you ever watched a loved one lose wealth due to bad investment choices … … made by someone else? When David Basten saw his mother’s inheritance evaporating under the watch of an inept bank trust team, he: 1. Created a strategy that tapped a broad swath of the stock market 2. Established a process to manage the potential market drama 3. Kept it straightforward enough for his mother—and countless others—to understand -- That’s the origin story of our firm. And it remains a core pillar to our approach to investing. How has it endured over the decades? Join David for a webinar on 10/10 at 11 a.m. ET to find out. ➡️ Link in comments ------- Center-of-the-market investing—An investment approach in which a portfolio holds a limited amount of securities from a broad cross-section of capitalizations, styles, and geographies within the global equity or fixed income markets.

Sure was fun watching the Magnificent 7 soar, wasn’t it? 📈 Ah, but those occasional tumbles, which seem to be happening more often … … sure caused some pain. 📉 David D. Basten founded our firm partially on the belief that such downside risk should be minimized. Which means we don’t buy into the trendy trades. Instead, we focus on: • solid fundamentals • steady performers • from across the investment spectrum And if one of our positions gets caught up in a surge higher … … our strict sell discipline helps mitigate the risks resulting from the rally. 🗓️ On October 10th at 11 a.m. ET, David will spell this all out in a live webinar. What’s at the core of your stock portfolio? You know, that set-it-and-forget-it portion you regularly add but otherwise leave alone? Is it: ✅ Understandable ✅ Drama free ✅ A steady performer Our founder, David D. Basten, applied such standards to the portfolio he created decades ago to help out his mother when her inheritance was shrinking due to mismanagement. As our firm has evolved over the years, he’s added a few more funds following the same core guidelines. And he’s helped many more people like his mother seeking a stable foundation to their portfolio. How does this approach work? David D. Basten made an early career pledge to his mom. He wanted to set her up with a solid financial future after his father died. Watching how the bank trust dept managed the inheritance she’d received was beyond frustrating. ↳ So, he decided to do it himself. He left Mason & Lee (the predecessor to Legg Mason, where he worked with his father-in-law) ✔Established an investment firm, Yorktown Funds ✔Built a growth portfolio ✔Started generating strong risk-adjusted returns Since then? Yorktown’s Growth Fund has earned a Lipper Award and 5 stars from Morningstar 🙌 But if you ask David what he considers his greatest achievement, it’s delivering solid returns for his mother—and hundreds of investors like her. ☆ We’re honored to be working with David and his team, which includes his daughter and two sons, on sharpening their sales and marketing strategy!

Bond yields, economic data, asset sectors, and investment positioning ⬇️ Someone recently asked us, if the commercial real estate market is so bad, why haven’t we seen the carnage just yet? We, of course, have seen it. We see it every day in various ways, but we tend to be so focused on one metric or one headline, maybe depending on headlines is a better way of saying it, that we seem to lose sight of it and put it out of our minds. The Yorktown Growth Fund Institutional Shares (APGRX) won Best Fund for the 10-year period (ended 11/30/23) in the Global Small-/Mid-Cap Funds category out of 72 other share classes based on consistent risk-adjusted returns. “The 2024 LSEG Lipper Fund Awards are recognizing perhaps the most dramatic three-year period that the markets have seen in decades. Fund managers being recognized have steered their investors through a pandemic, a mild recession, a war, skyrocketing inflation and dramatic central bank intervention. Whether you’ve been investing for just the past 15 years and have seen only the easy money environment following the Financial Crisis – or you’ve been an investor for 50 years and feel as if you’ve seen it all, there is no way to have foreseen the range of fundamental and non-financial factors that impacted the markets these past few years. We applaud the 2024 LSEG Lipper Fund Award winners such as Yorktown Management & Research Co. for delivering outperformance and the accompanying comfort of consistency to investors’ portfolios through a cross-current of global market disruptions.” - Robert Jenkins, Global Head of Research, Investment & Wealth LSEG Lipper. For corporate bonds, issuance in 2023 continued to be a far cry from the historic highs seen in 2020. Instead, it was just a continuation of the drab results of 2022, which itself was hampered by the initial foray of the Fed embarking on its rate hiking mission. As illustrated in the next slide, there was little difference between 2022 and 2023, as the total amount of issuance was at or near the ten-year lows last seen in 2018. In 2023, total corporate issuance, as reported by Sifma, was $1.4 trillion, which is far closer to the ten-year low of $1.3 trillion reported in 2018 than the 10-year high of $2.3 trillion reported in 2020. #fixedincome #marketanalysis #federalreserve
