About us

The Youth Opportunity Center is more than a beautiful 75-acre campus with residential cottages and a detention center. Beyond the accredited programs for diplomas on office walls, the YOC is about people helping people. Since the early 1990's, the YOC has provided a safe place for youth and families with severe challenges. Since then, thousands of children and families have been helped by YOC staff members who dedicated themselves to making a difference in a child's life. YOC's nine residential cottages, the juvenile detention center, outpatient counseling clinic and the psychiatric residential treatment center provide comprehensive behavioral health services to more than 60 counties in Indiana and more than 200 youth on a daily basis. The Youth Opportunity Center is accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA) which demands the highest standards of best practices in behavioral health services for youth and families. YOC doesn't stop at this accreditation and is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) which establishes the highest standards for doctoral level psychologist in a training environment. YOC is one (1) of (9) residential treatment facilities accredited within Indiana and is the only accredited pre-doctoral internship located serving youth and families. Mission: We help catch children who have fallen... Fallen on hard times, Fallen between the cracks, Fallen from grace. We pick them up. We stand up for them. We teach them to stand on their own. Then we watch them give back to their families, their neighborhoods, their communities, their world. Vision: If we can help save a child, then why couldn't that child save the family, the neighborhood, the community, the world?

Ongoing training and development efforts are critical to our work. The challenges facing the kids and families we work with are both timeless and as rapidly evolving as our fast-paced world. Some of our awesome staff recently attended the Indiana Youth Services Association (IYSA) annual Youth Worker Development Retreat. Pictured here are RaeAnn Lovell, Shaila Faletogo, Demetrius Bilbrey, Brooke Burgess, and Sydney Girardot. We appreciate our supporters who allow us to improve our services through these professional development experiences.

Indiana Michigan Power did fantastic work replacing a utility pole in front of YOC's home campus last weekend. Communication was great and they beat their estimate of how long power would be disrupted. One of the workers asked if we still helped kids. Assured that we do, he replied "Good. I was one of them." About 18 years ago he and his family were going through some challenges and he was placed in one of YOC's residential programs. He asked about some of the staff who had helped him and what had changed on campus. Since his time at YOC, he's served in the armed forces and has had a successful career. We don't always get to hear about where life takes the kids we are so lucky to work with. Power outage aside, it was a great day.

Had the opportunity to attend and assist with DCS' Older Youth Initiatives Placement Provider Training yesterday. Motivating day with colleagues generating ways to deliver the best services to older youth in out-of-home placement. Pictures below captured some of the inspiring sights around the Indiana Government buildings on my walk to the parking garage. What a beautiful day.

It's the start of school at YOC, and we got to see busses from three school corporations dropping off students for their first day yesterday. This is the second year for the YOC Therapeutic Day School, as well as the Muncie Community School's Alternative School program on our campus. Added to the on-grounds school for our kids who are staying with us, there is a lot of learning going on!

A donkey will freeze in place and assess the situation when it senses danger. In most cases, it won't move until it figures out the safest course of action. This can look like stubbornness, particularly if you don't realize something has it worried. Today our kids learned that bringing calmness and patience can be a big help to donkeys, and even to people. You never know what troubles they feel even on a bright sunny day, or how far a little kindness can go.
