Safe. Supported. Celebrated

About us

Established in 1998, Youth Outlook is Illinois’ first and longest-running nonprofit social services agency solely dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ youth. We offer services that impact the whole of the LGBTQ+ youth experience – self, home, school, and community. We work across Illinois, offering virtual and in-person drop-in centers for youth ages 12-20, age-appropriate programming for LGBTQ+ children in grades K-6, caregiver and parent support, community education, and professional development. The need for these services has never been more urgent. National research indicates that LGBTQ+ youth are coming out at an average age of 13, down from 19 about a decade ago, opening them up to victimization and rejection they are not equipped to handle and putting them at risk for poor mental health outcomes. We invite you to join us in helping LGBTQ+ youth feel safe, supported, and celebrated!

September 10th is internationally recognized as #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. The folks at the International Association for Suicide Prevention have gathered crisis resources from around the world that can be filtered by topic and country, including the 988 crisis line, The Trevor Project, and the LGBT National Help Center. According to The Trevor Project's 2024 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People, "39% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, including almost half of transgender and nonbinary young people (46%) and 3 in 10 cisgender young people (30%)." While we know that an LGBTQ+ identity is not itself an inherent risk factor for increased suicidal ideation, stigma and a lack of support very much are. It is imperative that we support LGBTQ+ youth by removing that stigma through allyship and education. Folks like the DuPage County Health Department are helping us in that endeavor via their new Crisis Recovery Center, set to open in the summer of 2025. You can learn more about what services the CRC will provide by watching this video: https://lnkd.in/gWQnFhki Start the conversation today. Every chat, no matter how small, builds a more supportive and understanding society. Together, we can make a difference and prioritize suicide prevention, ensuring everyone gets the help they need. #StartTheConversation

Maryann Krieglstein, Ph.D., is a social worker by background and by heart. She helped found Youth Outlook in the 90s as a social work professor who was talking about DEI and intersectionality with her students and in the community before we had put names to those matters. In the early days of the agency, Maryann was often one of the social work elders our executive director relied on when making decisions about Youth Outlook. Maryann has been our champion in the community for our entire 26 years, talking up our fundraisers, helping us recruit board members and volunteers, helping us think through grant ideas or program needs. Maryann has been at every Dare to Dream, at every tea dance at Hunter's Video and Dance bar. She continued to support our board even after serving on it in an official capacity, all while working to educate new generations of social work and human services students at Aurora University followed by College of DuPage. WIth Maryann's support and guidance during her tenure at COD, our Community Network group developed the region's first conference on LGBTQ+ youth needs, which eventually became Youth Outlook's Future Outlook conference. The conference is both an extraordinary opportunity for us to increase safe space for our youth as well as a creative fund- and friend-raiser. Now retired from academia, Maryann remains in touch by email and text and is one the first hands up when we need a basket for a silent auction. Maryann has truly been involved in our work since its inception. We are honored to present her with the Lorrie Lane Brenneman Achievement Award. Her friend Lorrie, the namesake of the award, also called it the "Amazing Person” award, and Maryann more than lives up to that description. Thank you so much, Maryann, for always supporting the agency and our mission. You have made an incredible difference in the lives of countless LGBTQ+ youth, and we could not be more proud nor more grateful to know you. #PeaceLoveDareToDream #DareToDream2024 #RainbowRevolution

Mary Jo Mullen, PE, PMP (no relation to our Executive Director) has been a community supporter of Youth Outlook's work for at least 6 years. She was responsible for bringing Youth Outlook a grant from the Lisle Township board in the fall of 2020, at the end of our first COVID year, that enabled our agency to hire the first full time development staff and the first full time Director of Operations. Mary Jo pointed out that the agency couldn't sustain itself with one full time employee and continue to grow, and she wanted to assist Youth Outlook to make the transition to have multiple full time employees handling the growing workload across numerous counties. This grant was leveraged against other grants which eventually led to us hiring a 4th full time employee, and the first full time team was here. We could not have made that transition without the generosity of that grant, and since that grant, we have continued to grow at an incredible rate. We are now up to 7 full time staff who are providing case management services (never existed before in this area of the state), community education, and fundraising work to help maintain our financial footing. Since leaving the Lisle Township board, Mary Jo has continued to support Youth Outlook. She opened her own bakery, The Sweet Spot Bakery, a couple of years ago and when we need a take-away for an event, Mary Jo offers to help us before she is even asked. We are incredibly grateful to Mary Jo for consistently supporting our organization through times of growth and change, and we are excited to honor her with this award! Thank you and congratulations, Mary Jo! #PeaceLoveDareToDream #DareToDream2024 #RainbowRevolution

Get ready for another edition of our #TGDWellness series in partnership with Illinois Department of Human Services and Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago! Besides “putting a rainbow on it”, queer and trans people need more from their healthcare providers to feel safe and included. Tonight, we're highlighting a few different methods you can use to make your practice a more welcoming space. For example, if you need to explain why you are unable to offer gender neutral restrooms, you can say something like, "We don’t have full control over our facilities here. There are gendered multi-stall restrooms in the hallway. Please use whichever is most comfortable for you and let our staff know if you need someone to accompany you." Read on for the rest of our tips, and feel free to ask questions or even share some tips of your own down in the comments! #GenderAffirmingCare #TransHealthcare #TheFutureIsInclusive

We are continuing our Dare to Dream Award Winner features with our Excellence in Service Award, which this year goes out to Matt Appleman! Matt Appleman is a force. He is always happy and his laugh is infectious! When PFLAG Sauk Valley started talking about doing something to support youth in our community, Matt was on the board, and he was a strong Youth Outlook advocate. He, along with the other board members, donated $20 a month (each) to get Youth Outlook's down payment together, and he was one of a handful who got trained to be a volunteer for our pilot test program in October 2011 and thus is among the very first volunteers for the Sterling location. In addition to his valuable time, he has invested supplies and ingredients for his popular Pizza Making Night activity. He purchased several giant blow up 'hamster balls' for our shared use with a recovery group that he started. They reside at our group and the kids love them when we pull them out. Matt has been a rock for as long as the Sterling site has been running. He is always willing to help out our community in whatever capacity he can. His salon, Rogue Salon, gets lots of local foot traffic, and he posts fliers about Youth Outlook’s programs, so kids going by know they are supported. He always is on the lookout for youth who might need Youth Outlook, and makes sure the info is available. Dixon youth that find him know his business is a safe place if/when needed. When asked about Matt Appleman, our youth said “he unlocks our joy” and described him as “who I want to be when I grow up”, among many other glowing accolades about his style, wit, and reliability. Thank you, Matt, for your years of commitment to ensuring LGBTQ+ youth in Sterling and beyond know that they are, and will always be, Safe, Supported, and Celebrated. Congratulations on earning this honor! #PeaceLoveDareToDream #DareToDream2024 #RainbowRevolution
